Did blacks culturally appropriate English? Did they culturally appropriate the light bulb and cars? Did the Chinese culturally appropriate trains and airplanes? Did the Arabs culturally appropriate missiles?

Yes. Just last week, as a matter of fact.

love this painting Our Lady of the Southern Cross wearing wattle
Thanks for the new word I just learned. The online Oxford dictionary defines it as a species of acacia. I suppose it’s what she’s wearing in her hair?
Yes, that’s her headband. Wattle is very much our national flower. The bushes are plentiful, and have the distinction of flowering heavily in late winter (before other flowers) with a bright golden flower.

Mother Teresa was portray in a very derogatory fashion in Hitcken’s documentary on her called Hell’s Angel.
Hitchens is an antitheist who constantly trashes religion. I am sure the Vatican doesn’t pay much attention to him.

As for Pope Pius XII and the Nazis, the Vatican was well aware he was secretly rescuing Jewish people the whole time and the “Hitler’s Pope” stuff was bunk. They were aware because the two Popes that came after Pius XII were involved in the secret rescue efforts and other quiet opposition to the Nazis when they were Pius XII’s aides.

We need to distinguish for purposes of this discussion the opposition to sainthood causes that comes from actual Catholic sources, and the opposition that comes from non-Catholics and atheists who are often just trying to create controversy in the media.

@ OP. Your attempt to empathize with a plight different than your usual experiences and articulate it personally into something that is meaningful is authentic. Watching the folly and the back biting thoughts cloaked within a subtle level of sarcasm, all the while stepping on one another’s backs to be the top dog of the lack of understanding here within your thread has been eye opening.

I’m not seeing “sarcasm”, “folly”, “stepping on one another’s backs to be the top dog”, or a “lack of understanding” in this thread, apart from one person dissing Barack Obama. Do you have specific examples other than the Barack Obama post? If not, your criticism does not really hold any water.

Merton was an atheist who turned Catholic, who became a monk, and wrote some absolutely beautiful and amazing spiritual works (I’m currently delving into “Seeds of Contemplation” and I can only read about two or three pages in a sitting. It’s very dense.)

But later, he got permission to study with some Buddhist monks, and kinda “went native”. I confess I didn’t read any of his books from this time, but from other people’s testimonies , he either delved into heresy, or came very close to it, or wrote stuff that looked at in a certain way was heretical (depending on whose testimony you believe).
Merton was a monk that is most revered by Catholics and his writings are treasures to behold. He writes within all things Catholic, has a strong framework of social justice and articulated Martin Luther Kings “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” with a wisdom that is timelessly applied.

I would suggest his readings, his books remain in print.

There’s no emoji. And to me, this is a very serious topic.

I think I am leaving the thread now and muting, as I’m perceiving this discussion is turning unfriendly, and this isn’t a good day for me to be fencing with people. God bless

I am guilty of cultural appropriation right now as I am writing this.

I am eating pizza which I culturally appropriated from the Italians.

With today’s globalization there’s more cultural appropriation than ever.

It is not necessarily a bad thing.

I was at a Native American festival a few weeks ago, and I wasn’t sure if I should wear my Native-themed jewelry to it, but decided against it because I didn’t want to be an insensitive white chick playing at being Native American.
But I needn’t have worried, because the vendors were selling the exact jewelry I left at home.

I honestly don’t want to offend or hurt anyone, truly, but sometimes I really don’t know what will set somebody off.

Why do you judge the past on present norms?

Do you hold the actions of a 5 yr old, or a teen up to adult standards? Geopolitics has evolved considerably in the past couple millenia.

I was thinking of putting it as a signature. But the fact is, sometimes I can be sort of a jerk late at night.

Woke doesn’t necessarily refer to being a Marxist.

It usually means being conscious of things that people of color, minorities, and women go through and recognizing that there are trends due to particular circumstances—not necessarily marxism

Aboriginal people aren’t too keen on mission history.

Stolen generations.

Great artwork though

Most of those things you hear about Columbus are not as bad as they’re made to be.

Thanks. It’s been a rather disheartening experience. I’m not surprised that it exists but the fact that this is under the “social-justice” category makes it even worse because you would expect some people to be more empathetic than they are. It just seems like some people are trolling out for the sake of trolling.

Jesus Christ is Lord.

A lot of people who were supposed to be His followers, did evils, and do NOT represent the Gospel according to Jesus or the Bible, or the Catholic Church.
Eg: Judas was a follower, betrayed Jesus for money.

Throughout history, any grave wrongs done by baptised catholics, these grave wrongs do not represent Jesus Himself, and those baptised catholics who wrong their brethren, have wronged Jesus Himself,

Such as: those baptised catholics no longer practicing their religion, who practice or support abortion (this is murder of the unborn child),

These actions are not a representation of Christ, but of Satan.

Do not attach to God, the wrongdoings of human beings,
The wrongdoings are reflections of the bad spirit, not of the Holy Spirit

Colonialism has been over a long time now. By colonialism I mean European colonialism, not the Islamic or what the Chinese attempted doing in the seventh and eighth centuries and many others, like the Persians, Mayans and Aztecs, check their histories out. It should also seem interesting to you that the most bloody and death tolled premodern wars took place in Asia in countries like China and let’s not forget the notorious Mongols, I don’t think they were white but they certainly made mince meat of white Orthodox Christian Russians. It doesn’t take a Biblical scholar to figure out that God views all people as equal. It also doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the days of guilt tripping white people is coming to end, like really to an end from Poland to Portland.
