My basic question: What steps can I take to get plugged into the church again?

Background: I come from a Catholic family (on my father’s side). All of my older siblings and I attended Catholic grade school (no high school in our area). I had my First Communion and regularly attended mass. Early in junior high (before I was confirmed) my parents divorced and I lived with my mother who was not Catholic. I then started attending a public school and have not been back to the church since.

In high school I started attending a Methodist church with some friends and continued attending after high school. Later I met my wife who is a Methodist and we were eventually married in the Methodist church.

In recent years I have lost my faith in the Methodist church and have felt a longing (almost called really) back to my roots. I have a very real desire to become reconnected with the Catholic Church and to begin attending mass again as well as practice the sacraments. I’ve shared this with my wife, who is very supportive, but I don’t know where to begin. It is as simple as meeting with a priest from the local parish?

Can anyone help? Do you know what steps I would need to go through?

Thank you for your help!

Begin by visiting with a priest. Make an appointment. 🙂
There is also RCIA in most parishes.
Very blessed to have you back.

Welcome home… call your parish office and make an appointment to see the pastor. All you should really need to do is go to confession and then later on down the road you will need to go to RCIA to go through confirmation…

Wonderful news and welcome home! Until you make all of the connections, here is a great website to visit. It is designed precisely for your situation:

www.catholicscomehome.org

Give it try. There is a lot of helpful information there. Also, they will send you a free copy of Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscovering Catholicism. Beside the picture on the right are three links. One is for you and one will be for your wife to investigate, as well.

Praise God!

Thanks to each of you for the reply. I am going to get in touch with a local parish. If I have more questions, can I post them here?

Why not? It’s as good a place as any. We are notified when you post, so we can get back to you.

Christ’s peace.

Welcome home!!!
It is wonderful to hear that your non-Catholic wife is supporting your efforts to come back to the church–what a blessing! Perhaps your example will move her to eventually convert. (I am a convert because of my cradle-Catholic husband.) There are so many ways to find out more about the Catholic faith–This Rock magazine, of course, and the Catholic Answers website, Catholics United for the Faith, EWTN, to name a few. If you are of child-bearing age, you may wish to check out the Couple to Couple League for Natural Family Planning website, which is full of great stuff about God’s plan for sexuality.
Find a solid, conservative parish to attend Mass. (Catholic churches come in all varieties nowadays, but you’ll be able to find a solid parish by word-of-mouth.)
I’m glad you have jumped on the Catholic roller-coaster; you are in for the ride of your life!
