Recording music?

Sp, what is your stance on recording music off the radio? To use on cassette tapes (yes, actually, I DO still use casette tapes!) or for sound bytes, ring tones, etc.

Also, I just got a phone, the first real one I’ve had, and plan to buy ring tones for it. I own several CD’s that are foreign or obscure, that I can’t find ring tones for. Since I own the CD already, would it be stealing to record snippets from it to use as my ring tone?

I do not see any problem with that.
 
I don’t see a problem with it either.

Nor for the ringtones. If you own the song, and it isn’t available to buy as a ringtone, I don’t see what’s wrong with recording a snippet of it for your own use.
 
I believe the letter of the copyright law allows anyone to make “A single copy for one’s own personal use.”

Outside of the “letter of the law,” what harm, financial or otherwise, could come to anyone from your making a single copy of something you already own?

Most of the time, this is more of a technical question actually. I have 2 different phones right now (1 for where I’ll be working this summer, 1 for when I’m back at university, different places and different cell providers and networks). 1 can use my own short mp3 clips as ringtones, the other can’t. Some can, some can’t; it really depends who your phone manufacturer is (Nokia & Motorola seem to be yes and Samsung seems to be no from personal experience).

I would say it’s legal and moral. Most phones today are mp3 players anyways, so it’s expected that you’re putting music that you own on it anyways.
