Hi. I’m a recovering alcoholic and want to know what I can do to keep the communion ritual holy in my life and although I cannot take the wine is there a way in the faith that I can still be a participant in receiving the Eucharist? I personally am plagued by this as I will never again be able to take the wine for the rest of my life.

Catholic tradition indicates that Christ is fully present in body, blood, soul, and divinity in both the bread and wine. You receive Jesus fully by receiving him in only one species, be that the bread or wine. There is no need to worry. The blood wasn’t offered to the laity for several centuries, and those who only received the body then surely weren’t lacking in their reception.

i am a recovered drunk of twenty-eight years and i drink the blood when it is offered at mass. i and several other drunks of my acquaintance refuse to believe that drinking the blood of Christ can cause harm.

You are not required to receive both species. That was a heresy long dispelled by the Church.
Christ is fully present (body, blood, soul, and divinity) in each so you can fully receive him in the host.

You’re an alcoholic for as long as you want to be an alcoholic. Don’t believe that 12 step program that once an alcoholic always an alcoholic. If you have the will to quit for the rest of your life you will. But if you say you’re an alcoholic, you are. The key to stop drinking is not wanting to drink anymore–to grow out of your addiction. I used to be an alcoholic/drug addict but I’m not anymore because I grew out of my addiction. I wanted to quit and I quit for the rest of my life. I don’t think about it and I don’t dream about it. If you’re not ready to grow up you won’t grow up and see that old habits are childish. When I become a man I have to put away childish habits. Simple as that. There is no secret to quitting drinking, no program, just the will to quit.

Given that the accident of alcohol still remains, yes it can harm you. You consume so little of it at Communion that it likely doesn’t have an effect on you, but it still have all the properties and effects of alcohol.

I, too, am a recovering alcoholic. I have never taken the Precious Blood from the chalice as I get it in the Host. Its fully present.

And don’t let people tell you that the wine won’t bother you. Sometimes just the thought of alcohol drives me crazy and I’ve been sober for 23 plus years.

Take what you’ve heard here and go discuss it with your priest.

I will reiterate what others have written. You receive the whole sacrament when you receive one species. You’re not missing out on anything.

God Bless you on your recovery. I know it’s not easy!
