As I have posted in another thread, I am undergoing an annulment but I couldn’t help but cry most of the times. The feeling of despair , anguished, hurt…

Would anyone like to share their own experience on how they were able to move on after a break up. what did you do and how long did it take until you have finally moved on and erased the feeling of despair, hurt and anguish???

thanks and God bless

I remember when my Dad died my mom said her priest said to not make any big decisions for at least one year, maybe longer. I did not seek an annulment for at least 5 years after my divorce was finalized. It was a real eye opener for me. I had been blaming myself because I was the one who ended the marriage but the annulment process helped me to recall not just all the things I had done but also some pretty disturbing things he had done. And above all, it revealed that it was not a valid marriage because of how we entered into it. I cried when I got the final divorce papers, but when the annulment was granted, I felt relief and a great burden lifted. It sounds trite, but time does heal, or at least it improves our perspective. God Bless.

Usually time will do the trick, but personally I can say, as a man, that it is not easy. My divorce was a blessing to my x, to my kids and finally for me. To stay in a bad marriage “just because” is the worst we can do. A divorce is a divorce, and a new chance. I had no problem to recover from the divorce, but there is a very special woman who I did love and date almost forty years ago, and still missing, I look at her picture almost every day and not a day have gone by that I have not thought about her, and being 50+ and closer to sixty I guess I will never forget her. But with time I have learned to look forward, not back in my life, and it helps, as someone once did say, “we can’t tell what will happen, and the present is soon only a memory but the past will always stand quiet”. We must accept that life is not all the time what we want it to be, but look forward, you did not find the right one this time, but maybe later on…I keep you in my prayers, and take care, there is really someone for you, one you will not find if you seek, one who will come in to your life when the time is right.

I prefer to make changes when relationships end. I like to change my routine, do new things, go new places, meet and spend time with new people, explore potential hobbies, read new books, see new movies, even redecorate/repaint. Keeping busy while focusing on positives makes healing easier and faster for me than wallowing in the negative feelings.

Mary,

I was married what would have been 17 years when I filed for divorce (my history is here on the forum also). Once my divorce was granted I filed for the annulment. I worked with my Priest – which helped a lot. So talking with your Priest, one that you feel comfortable will help you also.

But for me, being a man, I would get angry when I thought of all the issues we had and the final one that forced me to divorce her. Just as you cry. For me I did not try to hide or mask my anger / hurt / etc. so do not bury your feelings. The “bad” feelings do pass – and for each individual the time required is different. But I trusted in God, and relied on His strength to help me get past everything. He will help you also, do not despair as you will move past this and you will be happy again.

And when your annulment is granted it was a great relief. Have faith and trust in God, and remember that you are NOT alone. Talk with your Priest, friends, and family – and if that is too hard for you now you can always post here, as we will also be willing to listen and help.

May God grant you peace and strength.

Winter
