Maybe one day you will be in the class when one is asked a question and their response is to look at their spouse/boy-friend/girl-friend, eventually the sponsor answers not the candidate. Hopefully you will not get to see them fight before your eyes: that is ugly. BTW the proper response is: We (RCIA Team) will not support a recommendation for sacraments when the candidate’s assessment is from the spouse/boy-friend/girl-friend.

The priest should conditionally baptize her leaving her need for privacy separate from relationship to the church.
Ohhh, yeah, I forgot about that! Good one.

Until I know what’s going on with a lot more certainty, I’m deferring any sort of action at all, since there are any number of other things to consider, first. (For example, it’s possible that they tried to contact the parish secretary instead of me. This is one way that paperwork could have slipped through the cracks.)

Please note I do not agree that the BF/GF, Engaged should be Sponsors. What I have been saying is that NOTHING in the Rite or Church law Prohibits a SPOUSE (already validly married) from qualifying as a Sponsor. Sometimes they may not be the best choice, but no one can make it a blanket rule, “A Spouse cannot be your Sponsor!”.

It’s the same with Sacramental Preparation. I am told that it is my job to make sure they are ready, except that I am not allowed to record attendance, or insist that they register with a Baptismal certificate. (I can “strongly recommend” this, but I can’t tell them “no,” if they don’t.)

I
in this diocese I must have proof of Baptism, in fact, I must see the original certificate with seal, a fax or photocopy is not acceptable. this is spelled out, there is no wiggle room for sacraments of initiation or marriage on this. There is a procedure for getting a statement of witnesses that Baptism took place of no record is available.
