"Recycling" Catholic Newspapers

I am thinking about getting a Catholic Newspaper, and was thinking I could recycle it for the bedding for a bird I may get.

I am thinking it would not be appropriate considering the messiness on top of holy pictures. Am I being scrupulous, since it would go into the recycling or garbage bin anyway?

Unless you’ve had your newpaper blessed, I think you’re fine.
 
You might also think of taking it to your church and leaving it so someone else can read
it. Unlike a regular newspaper, the content does not get “dated”. I know I like to read
the National Catholic Register no matter the date.
 
Our parish has a rota of people who take the unsold (Catholic) newspapers to the local prison. I think this idea came from the chaplain there.

Perhaps you can suggest to your parish that they do this, and incorporate in the scheme a box where ‘finished-with’ papers can be put to be included .
 
What makes you think that bird poop is unholy? It’s as natural as the wood the paper is made of and it all ends up back in the earth eventually anyway. I’m terrible and usually just throw them in the trash (after they spend a few months collecting dust on my desk anyway).
 
If it’s the National Catholic Register, ask about leaving it at your parish so others can read it.

If it’s the National Catholic Reporter, put it in the bird cage, then cancel your subscription.
 
I like to leave my old Catholic magazines in the waiting rooms of doctor’s offices, etc., in the hopes of planting a seed…
