So, when you go to decorate or redecorate in your home, how do you husbands and wives compromise?

Does the wife choose the colors etc and then be sure dh is ok with them?

Does your dh just let you take care of it?

Do you not care and your husband takes care of it?

Do you have ‘equal’ say? If you just can’t agree, who will likely compromise?

I have friends whose husbands let them have total control, others whose husbands want to have control and some in between.

Just curious really about how many men care a lot about how the home looks and how many are fine w/ the wife making those decisions.

I’m getting married soon and I will be predominately responsible for making the home, including choosing decor and furniture. My future husband is thrilled to have a housewife so that we can have a “wifehouse”!
Basically, he is entrusting the home to me, but I will do my best to make him happy and will get his approval on major financial decisions.

My husband and I pretty much agree on whatever we do.

We tell the story of how we picked out our couch and loveseat.

We were at a furniture store, walking around, not together. I found something I loved. I looked up and he was at the other side of the store and he had just found something he loved. I tried to call him over to see mine. He sent the salesman over to get me. The salesman said that I might as well walk over and see my husband’s choice.

Of course it was the same as mine.

We pretty much have the same style.

Early comfortable.

While my wife and I have similar tastes, our styles are widely separate. I am a “function over form” guy, so it just has to work regardless of where it fits in the decor. I see only 5 colors and 2 shades on the home improvement store color wall (sky blue, baby blue, navy blue, denim blue, whatever - it is either light blue or dark blue) where my wife sees 100’s of color samples. My wife see’s wallpaper patterns - I only see two (plain wallpaper or ugly wallpaper). My wife spent hours selecting our china pattern. I was happy with the first white plate we saw.

What works for us is that my wife does the legwork and then tells me what we are going to do. I am very good at saying “yes dear” 😃

My husband likes the way I decorate. He really doesn’t get involved with colors or furniture placement or window treatments.

I only run by him the furniture purchases because of the cost, and he is always agreeable to what I’ve chosen.

Decorating the house is an easy process for us.

Hah, what a question. My husband usually lets me pick the colors since we decided years ago that he is not good at that. He does have veto power over shades of yellow however, since he used to paint as a side job and has strong feelings about yellows. He usually insists on doing the painting. I have been allowed to do closets, and more recently, some of the cutting in. I am not nearly as good at that as he is. We differ on furniture, and often go months before choosing a piece, but then we are usually satisfied with the choice we made.

I used to try to make (on a limited budget) our house look like house beautiful. I am more relaxed now. Our house is a home that has to accommodate both our tastes and interests. Ok, a few sports memorabilia are not particularly esthetic to me, but he really loves these objects. A flowered sofa is not particularly to his taste, but we found one he can live with and neutrilized it with other pieces.

So, I guess I am saying that we need to be kind to each other in this process.

If my husband were responsible for decorating our home we’d sit on cheap plastic yard chairs, store our clothing in cardboard boxes and laundry bags, and house our books and other detritus in milk crates that are occasionally abandoned near dumpsters. Our living room would be indistinguishable from a server room; cords and wires would be tacked to the walls or taped to the floor. Tinfoil over the windows would serve the dual purpose of affording us privacy and keeping out the sun’s heat. Our space would be dominated by an 85-inch television set and gaming console for playing the latest video games. The walls would be painted black to make the space more cave-like.

I’m no Martha Stewart, but it really is best if I decorate.

Over the years he and i have converged in our general tastes. But ultinately, I choose the colors. I choose the style. GoodHusband is happy so long as I adhere to his Zen aesthetic of ‘less is more’ in terms of how much stuff is in a room/ on the shelves/ on the walls.

DH doesn’t care. I consult him, but he has never been too interested in decorating and so goes with whatever I pick out. The one thing he did want was blue in the bedroom.

Married a geek, did you?

LOL

To start off, we married someone for whom we would be willing to live in a house we thought was hideous, if it pleased them. Second, we are (for better or worse) both fairly low-maintenence when it comes to decorating. We are more concerned about whether something will wear well and whether mud comes off of it than whether it is current fashion. We like kind of the same things.

Having said that, if push comes to shove, we both have a veto, and we wouldn’t purchase anything major without mutual consultation. We like to know the other would like it, I guess.

Neither of us feels particularly gifted in the decorating area, though. When we wanted to change our walls from white and re-upholster some furniture, we thought we wanted different things. We got a relative in who decorates for a living, we each told her what we were after, and she picked out colors and fabrics. We had no trouble choosing something we both liked from what she came up with as choices. I assume we’ll do something similar in the future. She was worth every penny, and then some.

I have primary say in paint colors given that my husband is partially color-blind. He does retain veto power and provides (name removed by moderator)ut into how much color vs. netural is involved. All of our furniture choices have been mutual decisions, limited severely by budget constraints. Fortunately, we both tend to prefer simple, comfortable, functional pieces.

If your DH is ever out near Philly we can grab a beer and compare man caves and then do some on-line gaming. P.S. - you don’t have any spare milk crates, do you?😃

I do… LOL! Was thinking of using them for some square foot gardening…hahahah!

My husband cares quite a bit about how our home looks. We both do. We have different tastes, and we both compromise. Neither one of us has total control. Neither one of us has the home decorated exactly as we’d like, but we both like it. We both have veto-power. We take each other’s opinion into account, and we hold out until we find things we both like that’s within our budget. When we can’t agree, we don’t spend the money. The one most likely to compromise is usually the who wants to replace the old stuff the most.

We have never fully re-decorated an entire room; we mostly update and replace what’s worn out. That narrows down our choices, because we pick what looks good with what we already own. When we find something that we both like that we can afford and that we’re close to needing, we usually get it. Occassionally, one of us will just go ahead and will buy a bargain without consulting the other, and that usually works out okay because it’s done with the other person’s taste and our budget in mind.

Particulary with paint, (but with other things also) we’ve learned that even when we do agree, it doesn’t always look like what we thought we were getting! Now we buy a sample of the actual paint (or even a few of them)to try on a wall before paint the whole room. Same with bedspreads, curtains, tiles, etc. We’ve often end up taking things back because the colors just don’t look right when put with other things in the room.

I don’t mean to brag, but I think our home is beautiful. 🙂 It has an appropriate amount of “feminine” and “masculine”. It all blends together well and looks like we spent a lot more money than we did. It took a great deal of effort and compromise from both of us to make it look like it blends effortlessly.

In the past, I have just done it. When we moved, the change in house styles was so radical (1 story to 2 story, open floor plan to separate rooms) and I was so depressed that I haven’t gotten up a whole lot of interest in decorating. I feel that the entire house needs to be gutted and re-done so why spend a lot of time and money decorating now?

Hubby wants me to “just do it,” like I have in the past. It bothers him that I have not. At the moment I am more focused on the outside - this house has a HUGE backyard that I want to landscape - and he gets frustrated by that, evidently. He wants me to get busy IN the house but I have just not gotten much motivation to do that. Waiting for inspiration…but it’s slow in arriving. I spent 20 years in the last house, which was the entire time our kids were growing up. I INVESTED in that house. I don’t feel the same investment in this one, which makes it hard to care.

I do want to call in a decorator but I need to get some estimates on renovating first. Everything I can think of to do, from putting marble or granite around the fireplace, to painting, to redoing the kitchen countertops, can’t be done now if we are going to remodel. In the other house, I could get a couple of jobs done at a time and the result was that eventually, it all worked together, but I won’t start something if it has to be torn out a year later. For example, the kitchen and bathrooms and our closet all have fluorescent lights. I DESPISE them. But why install new light fixtures if we are going to rip out and remodel the room? So we are trying to get by for now and that involves me ignoring them while I think about the huge job of remodeling.

Hubby and I are different when it comes to furnishings too. I love antiques, because they have a history built in. I love to touch old wood and know that there have been lives lived in the company of that piece of furniture, especially old kitchen tables. When he thinks of antiques, hubby pictures huge old dark-stained wardrobes like the ones that fill English houses. He feels almost threatened by their looming presence. So we have some arguments about things like that. I like to buy things and then figure out where they are going in the house; he is forever asking me, “Where are you going to put it?” If I like the piece well enough, I will throw something else out to give it a home! 😉

In the end, though, if one of us strongly objects, that’s the end of the discussion. If he says “No,” to something I want to do, I will not do it. If I say, “No,” he drops it. Usually, both of us will listen to the other and try to find a common ground.
