I apologize for making another topic so soon, but I have a bit of a Catholicism 101 question. We believe in redemptive suffering, but I’ve been thinking about it quite a bit lately. Does that mean that if we offer it up as penance, it can remit punishment for sins for both of us and for souls in purgatory? Even if it has nothing to do with suffering for the faith and was only our choice in so far as it is partly our own fault? I’m disabled and didn’t work as hard as I should when I was younger and I’m beginning to pay for that now. I can actually use that to get souls out of purgatory?

Redemptive suffering means aligning your suffering with Christ on the cross. Does not matter if you brought your own suffering on yourself. We ask God to remove are inclinations that lead us to suffering and we ask God to join all of our suffering to that of Christ. In this way we become a part of the sacrifice. No matter what pain you suffer, you can offer it to God as part of Christ suffering
