Based on my husband’s salary we qualify for reduced rate lunches for our two children. However my dad died and left us some money. Is it right to accept the lunches even though we could pay for them from savings?

go by whatever the rules are for the program. If they require you to report earned income, do so. If they require you to report investments, savings, etc., do so.

Agree with annie here, esp. if you’ve set that money aside in an investment such as a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, or a plan for the kids’ education. According to the sheet I just looked up, those things don’t count against the free and reduced lunch program (and breakfast where offered).

The form asks what each person brings into the family in income, starting with earned wages, then child support, welfare, alimony; then money received FROM a pension, social security, or retirement (NOT how much is in it); then workman’s comp, SSI, and other income. It never asks how much is in the bank, even, such as food stamps.

I help relatives raising young relatives fill these out all the time.

They only use earned income. Not savings. I made sure I asked and they said it was based on income only. And yes the money is invested. I just wasn’t sure whether it was right or not since technically we have enough money to pay for them, just not from our earnings. We’re trying hard live on dh’s salary and not get into any of that money.

You also pay taxes, have the correct income, and therefore you qualfiy.

Let me ask the logic/ ethics/ philosophy professor across from me.

He said it’s OK, as long as you meet the qualifications on the form.

I will also let you know- You are **not **depriving another child of this program if you apply and qualify. It is very open-ended.

Thank you very much as I’ve been mulling this one around and around. I feel much better now. 🙂

I kind of figured that’s what it was.🙂 Glad to be of help.

If it makes you feel better you could call (who?) and ask if inheritance counts as income.

I called both of the schools and asked the person in charge of the paperwork there if assets counted or only income, and they said income only.

See? Now go fill out the form and see if you qualify. if you lost your form in the process, here’s the original from the govmit:

http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/FRP/frp.process.htm

As you can see, I did tell you it was a far-sweeping, broad-based program for everybody, and your children will not disqualify other children who might need it more.
