Reference threads are informative and largely uncontroversial threads intended to instruct others on common topics of discussion. Some examples of reference threads for Eastern Catholicism would be:

What is Eastern Catholicism?
Eastern Catholic prayers
What should I expect when visiting an Eastern Catholic Church?
How do you pray with an icon?
Recommended reading on Eastern Catholicism
Common Icons and their explanations

If you would like to see these or any other topics in reference threads on the Eastern Catholicism forum, please respond to this thread or write me a private message.

I hesitate to comment one way or the other since I fear that the “reference threads” will be Byzantine in nature. Yes, I know full well that the Byzantines comprise the largest group, but numbers don’t tell the full story: the Syriac, Coptic, and Armenian traditions are of equal value.

Malphono,

That is a legitimate concern. When I was the moderator of Spirituality, I implemented the reference threads there. I asked people who had a special interest to propose a thread topic and once approved to construct a thread on that topic of at least around 7 posts. If a topic didn’t have enough information for that many posts, they were asked to broaden the topic.

They would then send me the proposed thread and I would make any corrections or suggestions. Once we agreed, the poster would post the thread. I would close the thread to new posts, explaining that it was a reference thread and asking anyone who wished to add to it to contact me directly. I then added a link to the thread on the single sticky at the top of the board.

By using the information that posters volunteered, the information in the reference threads was often random and varied. However, it gave people equal footing so that one type of spirituality didn’t predominate the threads. Likewise, I would encourage reference threads on the Oriental Catholic Churches and I would welcome additions to established threads which expanded on the Oriental views on the topic; however, I couldn’t guarantee that someone would take me up on the offer and post it. If a particular Oriental Catholic poster decided to take reference threads up as a cause, it is just as likely that information on the Byzantine Churches could be lacking.

I hope this explains the likely pros and cons of the system.

May God Bless You Abundantly,
Catherine

Yes. Probably should have a thread each on Basic differences of each of the Eastern Rites: Constantinoplean/Byzantine, Alexandrian/Coptic, Antiochian, Syrian, Armenian.

Thank you very much for the further information. Looking at it that way, there is at least the possibility that the various non-Byzantine/non-Constantinopolitan Oriental traditions would be represented.

On that basis, I agree that the reference threads may prove useful. I also agree with Aramis’ suggestions, and hope they will be taken into account as well.

Kind regards

I’m glad I could help.

All others reading this, please place your vote on the poll above.

The poll shows overwhelming support for reference threads in Eastern Catholicism. If you have ideas for threads you would like to see or if you would like to volunteer to compose a reference thread on a topic of your choosing, please contact me or post here and we’ll get the ball rolling.

It seems that if you spend enough time on the forum you see the SAME basic questions asked again and again. People do come to this forum looking to find out the basics, so this should be facilitated in a more efficient manner. 🙂

Although I don’t know enough about anything to write a reference thread there is one topic that could defiantly benefit from a sticky thread explaining it.

The Filioque

A thread simply outlining the history of the clause, the Eastern Catholic position (well, the Roman Catholic position really) and the opposing Orthodox position. If it covers all the bases in terms of what everything thinks of it without being to colored then hopefully we won’t get the normal 3-5 threads a week about it popping up on this forum.

Just an idea.

Johnny,

That topic is too controversial to be a reference thread. I would consider a thread with links to documents, statements, and books on the filioque, but even that would be unlikely to be approved. If someone has enough official teaching documents that are specific to the Eastern Catholic churches to create a 7 or more post thread, I would privately review it for inclusion.

Please keep brainstorming!

May God Bless You Abundantly,
Catherine

Within the next month, I plan to do an in-depth investigation into the original Greek of quotes from the Fathers regarding filioque. Would a simple list, sans commentary, of such quotes from the Fathers be eligible as a reference thread?

Humbly,
Marduk

I think I answered this via private message when it was asked. If not, please PM me.

Any of those would be good, but especially the first one on the list

The binary log contains all statements that update data or potentially could have updated it (for example, a DELETE which matched no rows). Statements are stored in the form of “events” that describe the modifications. The binary log also contains information about how long each statement took that updated data. The binary log has two important purposes:
Code:
* For replication, the binary log is used on master replication servers as a record of the statements to be sent to slave servers. The master server sends the events contained in its binary log to its slaves, which execute those events to make the same data changes that were made on the master. See Section 16.4, “Replication Implementation Overview”.

Malphono:

One thing you could do is to contact your brothers & sisters from those non-Byzantine traditions in P/M’s and emails and try to coordinate at least one or two threads based on your traditions.

I’ve been attending a local Maronite Catholic Parish, and I find their Divine Liturgy to be beautiful and their people to be friendly and welcoming. I’m always awed and humbled to hear the words of our Lord chanted in the language our Lord used. and, There is something in their Liturgy that seems to take me and place me on the altar with the bread and wine that becomes “Christ our God”.

I can always provide links, but I can’t provie what it means to be an Eastern Rite Catholic. That can only be provided by someone who has lived as one.

Your Brother and Servant in Christ, Michael
