References for "Suffering"

Are there any saints or a reference to a Church document that says something to the effect that when we suffer, it is Christ suffering? Or it is an extension of Christ’s suffering through us?
 
I forget the verse, but it is in an Epistle in the Bible. Sorry for not being much help.
