Not so long ago, just when I came back home from work and started heating up some food, the intercom rang and I heard a very nice voice extending a polite greeting. I tried my best in return, then the person said her name. I already suspected it would be a Jehovah’s Witness call… I have insane intuition. It was a nice name, a very Catholic first name followed by a nobiliary surname. Proper sir, no, “hey, bro!” addreasses. She asked whether I believed one could apply directions from the Holy Scripture in daily life, whether it was practical. I said yes, of course, one even ought to. She was somehow pleased or reassured, don’t know what it was, and I thought what a pity she wasn’t Catholic. I thought there would be such a good and worthy place for her here. She tried to leave me a periodical treating about the Holy Scripture. I thought maybe I’d take it since I can always take a look just to learn about what people believe in, but then I thought it would be laden with religious propaganda aimed at my conversion, so I politely asked if it was related with a religious denomination. She said yes, they were Jehovah’s Witnesses. It was so painful. Don’t get me wrong, no surprise there, I perfectly knew from the beginning, but still. I so regretted she wasn’t Catholic. Still, I didn’t decide to go downstairs (I live on 11th floor), which would likely have been required to get the periodical - honestly, part of the reason why I didn’t want it was because I was tired. Told her I was Catholic and invited her to become the same, thanked and declined the periodical. Now I think it was still early after work, I hadn’t even swapped the suit for something else (in fact, I’ve just realised I’m still wearing that suit), so I could have gone downstairs and attempted something. Surely I wouldn’t have converted her right off the bat, but maybe I’d have planted a seed. You know how it is. Besides, just what Church should people normally be led to if they want so much to be children of God? Couldn’t one word bring results perhaps some ten years after? I believe it could.
The question is now, have you ever attempted to convert a Jehovah’s Witness coming to your house? Has it ever worked?
I think I’m going to pray for that one a bit more. I wish I could be as sincere in her faith as she was in hers. Hope she finds the Church at the end of her way, as all those people who sincerely believe in what is not the full deposit of the faith. That includes a lot of Catholics, actually, although in this case there’s at least the assent to believe in what the Church teaches, even if there’s error as to what exactly it is.
