It began in the late 1960s. Catholic Universities were partly caught in the cry for freedom. Some are concerned that it takes the Church a long time to deal with certain things. I think that after any vagueness regarding the “freedom” some seek disappears, there are no more excuses left. The freedom experiment has run its course. It has been found wanting.

Well, Ed, Satan is the father of lies. He was a liar from the beginning. And a murderer.

The lie here is that those seeking “freedom” in our “Catholic” universities didn’t know what freedom really is. Freedom is the ability to do that which one “ought” to do. They confused it with license, which is the ability to do whatever one wants.

We have lost the battle at many “Catholic” universities, which have given themselves to the world, and, therefore, Satan. The world in which we live is violently opposed to Christ, His Church, and His truth. Those universities need to be disenfranchised and made secular universities and prevented from falsely advertising themselves as “Catholic.”
 
Most of society’s problems can be closely aligned with the messages being sent by the entertainment industry, but people don’t want to see it, because they are loyal to their entertainment. We are the dogs who are being fed a bitter pill that is stuffed inside a treat. The bitter pill is what ails society and the treat is entertainment. If only more people could open their minds…
 
Win the hearts of the alumni (i.e., the $) and the uni’s will follow.

The problem is that the Entertainment industry has won more hearts of alumni than the Church’s teaching. That’s why we’re in this predicament.
 
Edwest2: I think this is an age old problem.I would conjecture that ever since the Church started laying down roots there has been this tendency in the aspirations of peace or not to be seen as intollerant of others views to allow certain laws to be allowed which didn’t accually go against church teachings eased certain restrictions.But as always easing of standards only leads to more lessenings.In the course of time the Church has to take a stand and start hardening down her views or things invariably get out of control.I don’t blame the Church its the way human nature is.I believe we’re in this time again.Catholics need to stand up and be counted before some new cataclysm occurs.
 
This is currently a sore subject for me. My daughter has worked really hard at school. She has been accpeted by some great schools and been offered scholarships and grants. She wants to go to school in Boston. She has been given generous offers by Boston University (accepting only 4,000 out of 43,000 applicants) and Northeastern. Boston College is the only Catholic school she applied to. Her letter to them was all about her Catholic Faith. Boston College was the only college to put her on a waiting list. I was really dissappointed.

Peter kreeft the philosophy professor at Boston College says BC stands for “Barely Catholic”.
 
Reread me carefully so you don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m convinced that it is better to attend a secular and blatantly catholic-hostile public university (with a good parish or healthy Nuemann Center) than it is to go to a supposedly catholic university in which the catholic identity has not been protected and nurtured by the administration for some time.

For one thing, you MIGHT get out of debt someday that way. For another, you’ll probably end up with a stronger and better formed faith.

IMO, specifically catholic education is MOST critical in the youngest years elementary and junior high school. These are the times when basic world views are formed. Luckily they are also where good catholic education costs the least too!
 
On the other side of the coin is Franciscan Univ of Steubenville. Before the friars came - and before it was Catholic - Steubenville was listed in Playboy’s Party School directory in the 50’s.
 
All those who give instruction at a Catholic institution, at least those who give instruction in matters of doctrine and dogma, faith and morals (if not all of them!), from local parochial schools to the biggest universities, should have to have the mandatum from the local bishop.

I’ve heard some parents claim that their kids are better off going to a public university than a barely Catholic university, and I agree. At least there’s less hypocrisy at the public universities. Hasn’t our society sunk far enough? The addiction to shallow amusements needs to end.
