How did Laetare Sunday get to be known as Refreshment Sunday?

Must be a local and/or regional term; I’ve never heard of it and I’ve lived throughout the U.S.

The name is based on the day’s gospel, John 6:1-15, which tells us about the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. source]

I didn’t know it was. I have never heard of such a thing.

MikeDunphy, Thank you for the information about the various names for Laetare Sunday.

It is used in England and Commonwealth countries, and in Anglican churches, as well. (I always chuckle when people assume that something they have not heard of is automatically provincial.)

I live in a Commonwealth country (Australia) and have never in my 40 years heard such a term as ‘Refreshment Sunday’.

Sounds all wrong somehow - as if the miraculous feeding of the crowds by Christ is the equivalent of His popping on the kettle for a spot of tea and scones for them or something.
