What is your line of reasoning to refute Jesus being Michael Archangel?

I don’t know the answer. The owner of this website was on Catholic Answers last week . You can listen to the show from the archives. They had two shows on talking to JW’s.

catholicxjw.com/

The JWs justify that belief on one verse, “He will come with the sound of an arc angel”. No much to base such a belief on.

“To which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my son; today I have begotten you’”?
“Let all the angels of God worship him” Hebrews 1:1-6

The answer is NONE of the angels did God ever say that to. Also it says “Let ALL of the angels of God worship him”

In verse 3 it says the Son is the EXACT representation of the Father’s being. An angel is not an exact representation of God.

The JWs think that because Christ will come with the sound of an arc angel preceding him that makes him an angel. With that line of reasoning I can put a fog horn on my car and make it into the Titanic.

I’ve got their brochure before me (What doest the Bible teach?)

I’ll skectch out the argument for their belief:

**1. **Michal is an archangel (Jud 9). The “archangel” is in the Bible only in the Sg form —> there is only 1 archangel

Yet the archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!”
(Jud 9, NAB)

**2. **
*For the Lord himself, with a word of command, with the voice of an archangel and with the trumpet of God, will come down from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. *
(1 Thes 4,16 NAB)

Stating further:

This suggest then that the archangel Michal is Jesus alone.

**3. **Rev 12,7 + Rev 19,14-16 - Jesus described as the leader of the heavenly armies

*Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back *
(Rev 12,7, NAB)

The armies of heaven followed him, mounted on white horses and wearing clean white linen. Out of his mouth came a sharp sword to strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod, and he himself will tread out in the wine press the wine of the fury and wrath of God the almighty. He has a name written on his cloak and on his thigh, "King of kings and Lord of lords.
(Rev 19,14-16, NAB)

**4. **Paul talks about Jesus and his mighty angels

and to grant rest along with us to you who are undergoing afflictions, at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels,
(2 Thes 1,7, NAB)

Conclusion allegedly being:
A.) The Bible talks about Michal and his angels
B.) The Bible talks about Jesus and his angels
C.) and since the Bible does nowhere mentions that there are two armies of angels - one lead by Michal and another by Jesus
→ thererefore:

Jesus in the Michal Archangel

(clearly fault in logic at the end. E.g.
  1. Peter is a student
  2. Paul is a student
  3. Since nowhere (theoretically) it is mentioned that there are other persons denoted as a “student” —> therefore Peter is Paul.)
Every comment welcomed

There is not a single verse that says that Jesus is Michael the Archangel.

It goes even deeper: if Jesus was merely A god and not THE GOD, then we are not saved and our mortal sins are not atoned for. I have an article if you would like to read it, zemi. In it, I explain that the only way mortal sin can be atoned for is if GOD HIMSELF suffered.

here is the link if you would like to read it:

catholicmeditations.org/index.php?root=theology&sub=darth_vader

here is the quote if you need to find it:
While we are at it, we should note this theology of “infinite insult” will be quite useful in dialoguing with Jehovah’s Witnesses or Seventh-Day-Adventists, who do not believe in everlasting punishment for the damned. Indeed, JW’s are consistent in not only believing that Hell is not eternal but also that Jesus is not God, for, certainly, if our sin does not have infinite consequences, then neither would our Redemption need to be accomplished directly by God Himself. But, it stands that if you choose to prefer some finite, created good to the Infinite, Uncreated Good of God Himself (which is essentially what you are doing in a mortal sin), then you are necessarily implying that you believe the inferior good is superior. Hence, this is insulting to an infinite degree, since the gap between the two goods is infinite. But how do make up for an infinite insult? Essentially, you can’t, and so, if you don’t repent, you must suffer endlessly, never fully atoning for it.

I find it tough to argue from the bible with them because they want to use their New World Translation which has been worded to deny Jesus’ Divinity.

example: Hebrews 1:6 can be used because it says that the Angels worship Christ, and you are not suppose to worship an angel, therefore Jesus couldn’t be an angel with the other angels worshiping him.

Most Bible translations:

**KJV **- Hbr 1:6 - And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God **worship **him.

**NKJV **- Hbr 1:6 - But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God **worship **Him.”

**NLT **- Hbr 1:6 - And then, when he presented his honored Son to the world, God said, “Let all the angels of God **worship **him.”

**NIV **- Hbr 1:6 -
And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels **worship **him.”

**ESV **- Hbr 1:6 -
And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels **worship **him.”

**NASB **- Hbr 1:6 - And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD **WORSHIP **HIM.”

**RSV **- Hbr 1:6 - And again, when he brings the first-born into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels **worship **him.”

**ASV **- Hbr 1:6 - And when he again bringeth in the firstborn into the world he saith, And let all the angels of God **worship **him.

But when you read their version of the bible:

Hebrews 1:6 (NWT)
But when he again brings his Firstborn into the inhabited earth, he says: “And let all God’s angels do **obeisance **to him.”

obeisance \oh-BEE-suhn(t)s; oh-BAY-suhn(t)s, noun:
  1. An expression of deference or respect, such as a bow or curtsy.
  2. Deference, homage.
So their bible say’s that the angels are honoring him, or showing him respect, but not worshiping him.

The Greek word in question is: proskyneō
  1. to kiss the hand to (towards) one, in token of reverence
  2. among the Orientals, esp. the Persians, to fall upon the knees and touch the ground with the forehead as an expression of profound reverence
  3. in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication
    a) used of homage shown to men and beings of superior rank
  4. to the Jewish high priests
  5. to God
  6. to Christ
  7. to heavenly beings
  8. to demons
But in Matthew 4:10 they translate the same Greek word as “Worship”

Then Jesus said to him: “Go away, Satan! For it is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”
