On the apologist form, I once ran across a link to a ten (or twelve or something like that) proof to the illegitimacy of the “sola scriptura” idea. After trying to search for it, I still can not find it again. Could anybody provide me with this link? Or atleast provide some solid denials of sola scriptura. And how do we know that this extra-scriptural tradition is that of the Catholic faith?

Today, I was absolutely rattled while talking with a few Lutherans. Usually, when I discuss religion it is with atheists, Mormons, and Lutherans who do not know their scripture well at all. When talking with Mormons I have learned to just dominate the conversation, and they are thoroughly confounded. But tonight I couldn’t recall any specific verses about Sacred Tradition, and thus, was phased. Please help! Thanks in advance.

I Timothy 3:15 refers to the Church, and not Scripture, as the pillar of truth.

That all I have off the top of my head…but its late

Scripture Catholic is a nice source with explanations of scripture although I always look up each scripture because not all have the same impact as others.

Here is the one to scripture alone.

Also this one from Christopher Wong on EWTN

Sola scriptura is not taught anywhere in the Bible - so it’s self-refuting.

To me, the idea of sola scriptura implies the early churches that the apostles established at great pain (literally) were not meant by God to continue as true churches, but merely to exist temporarily as means of producing Christian scripture. When that was done, they would go out of existence as valid churches, and later generations would discover the written residue they left behind, and from that written residue Christianity would be reconstructed.

Could that have been God’s plan?

Black Knight MI, that wasn’t the one I was thinking of, but it is excellent, thank you very much!

MarcoPolo, that is the one! Thank you both so much. I can rest in peace tonight, haha.

I don’t mean to side-track. Does S.S. teach all revelation is in Scripture or that we can find what is needed for Salvation in Scripture? For some reason I was taught the latter.

That depends on what congregation whatever particular protestant you’re asking belongs to. S.S. is a hard principle to argue against because it never seems to have a concrete definition.

I pulled this verbatim off of carm.org. I figured I would offer it up because I got a pretty good laugh out of it to be honest. Does anyone else find any irony in this ?

" It is not required of Scripture to have a statement to the effect, “The Bible alone is to be used for all spiritual truth,” in order for sola scriptura to be true. Many doctrines in the Bible are not clearly stated, yet they are believed and taught by the church."

This confuses me…you can use sources other than the Bible to defend Sola Scriptura? Am I reading that right?

That is kind of what I got out of it. The “comparison chart” of different religions is “interesting” too, because it claims that “Christians” (as they define the word, and NO Catholics are not “Christians” by their declaration…gofigure…) do not believe anything that is not in the Bible (except for this, which they claim does not need to be in the Bible to be true). Reading it almost makes me feel like I’m arguing with my 10 year old daughter, who is trying desperately in complete defiance of adult logic, to convince me of the rightness of her wrong action. The whole thing is circular enough to make me dizzy.

The folks at CARM are also pretty vehemently anti-Catholic, the hallmark of which is a double standard. Try not to read too much into their definition of sola scriptura if it doesn’t make any sense. It doesn’t.

I just read the CARM “Statement of Faith” and they could have summed it up by saying “Just as long as you’re not Catholic, you’re good with us”

Sorry if the thread was temporarily hijacked with that, but if this is the “typical” Protestant understanding, I guess the whole point is, does that really need to be refuted ?
