I thought it would be interesting to have a place where one can refute error found in videos supposed to “teach the truth” about Catholicism.

The first video I want to rebuke is a list of supposedly false Catholic teachings. I can’t link to it due to CAF rules, but I can affirm our truths in a way that refutes their claims.
  1. Prayer for the dead: 2 Maccabees 12:43-46, Acts 9:40, 2 Timothy 1:16-18, 2 Timothy 4:19
  2. Sign of the Cross: Ezekiel 9:4, Luke 9:23, 1 Corinthians 1:23, Galatians 3:1
  3. Candles: Exodus 25:31-38, Exodus 27:19-20, 2 Chronicles 13:11, Mark 4:21, Revelation 1:12-13,20, Revelation 2:1,5
  4. Veneration of saints and angels: Gen. 19:1, Gen. 42:6, Exodus 28:2, 1 Sam. 28:14, 2 Chron. 32:33, Psalm 150:1, Matthew 18:10, Luke 1:28, Romans 13:7, 1 Cor. 11:1, Phil. 2:25-29, Hebrews 3:3
  5. The Sacrifice of the Eucharist (Greek for Thanksgiving) offered daily: Malachi 1:11, Psalm 113:3, Psalm 116:17, Luke 22:19, John 10:17-18 (note: “when I want”, not “once”), Acts 20:28, 1 Corinthians 11:26,
  6. The veneration of Mary did not originate in the Council of Ephesus, but is found from Genesis through Revelation, which reveals the Messiah as well as His mother: Gen 3:15 / Rev. 12:1 (we are the offspring of the Woman whose firstborn is Christ), Isaiah 7:14/Matt. 1:23/John 1:14 (Mary is truly Mother of God), Neh. 2:6 ( the Queen Mother sits beside the King. She is the primary intercessor before the King.), Luke 1:28 (angel venerates Mary), Luke 1:42 (the Baptist is born of Elizabeth simply because she is Our Lady’s relative), Luke 1:43 (Elizabeth says: “the mother of my God”), Luke 1:44 (Mary’s voice makes the unborn John leap of joy in the womb and be filled with the Spirit), Gal. 4:4 (she is co-redeemer, as God did not redeem us without her, and the son took flesh from her)
  7. Vestments of priests: Exodus 28:2
  8. Purgatory is not something introduced by Pope Gregory the Great, but something revealed by our Lord and by the apostles: Matt. 5:26,18:34 (a temporary state of purification), Matt. 12:32 (forgiveness is not necessary in heaven, and there is no forgiveness in hell), Luke 12:47-48 ( in heaven there are no beatings, and in hell we will no longer live with the Master), Luke 16:19-31 (no suffering in heaven, no compassion in hell), Heb. 12:23 (those in heaven are already perfect, those in hell can no longer be made perfect), 1 Cor. 3:10-15 (saved through fire after death, although not lost - no fire in heaven, and we are lost in hell), Rev. 21:4 (there is no mourning or pain in heaven, and God will not wipe away their tears in hell). Even in the Old Testament: Baruch 3:4 (prayers for the dead are unnecessary in heaven and unnecessary in hell), Zech. 9:11 (the waterless pit is not heaven, and God will not set free those in hell), Zech. 13:8-9 (the ones that perish go to hell, and there is no need for refinement in heaven).
  9. Latin as universal, unchanging language: undoing of the divisive curse of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9), preserved the true religion and the Sacred Scripture all around the world without subjecting them to the myriad of variations of each dialect (there are today 6,500 languages in the world and Scripture cannot be translated into most of these due to a very limited vocabulary).
  10. Title of “Pope”: Pope means Father. Protestants apply eisegesis (imposing their view) on Mt 23:8-9 rather than exegesis (drawing out the meaning of the passage from its context), since the Lord said to not call anyone father or teacher inasmuch as there is only one Father and Teacher. The apostles called him teacher, and they refer to themselves as fathers. Acts 7:2; 22:1,1 John 2:13, 1 Cor. 4:15, 2 Cor. 12:14, Phil. 2:22, 1 Thess. 2:11, Philemon 10, 1 Peter 5:13, 1 John 2:1,13,14 The Lord calls Abraham “father” (Matt. 3:9; Luke 3:8), Luke 1:32 (an angel speaks of David as the “father” of the Lord), Matt. 15:4-5; 19:19 (the Lord reminds us to honor our father). Jerome, Church Father, refers to the bishop of Rome in the 4th century as “Your Blessedness” (this is the 37th bishop of Rome - Gregory I is the 64th).
  11. Evidence from Church Fathers of Peter’s presence in Rome: Ignatius of Antioch (“Not as Peter and Paul did, do I command you [Romans]. They were apostles”), Dionysius of Corinth (" Peter and Paul at Rome…suffered martyrdom at the same time"), Irenaeus (" Peter and Paul were evangelizing in Rome and laying the foundation of the Church"), Tertullian (“the nearby Romans sound forth, to whom both Peter and Paul bequeathed the Gospel and even sealed it with their blood”), Eusebius (“The Apostle Peter, after he has established the Church in Antioch, is sent to Rome, where he remains bishop of that city, preaching the Gospel for twenty-five years”), Cyril of Jerusalem ("[in] the City of Rome…Peter and Paul arrived, a noble pair and the rulers of the Church…Peter was there, he that carries about the keys of heaven").
I believe the above is enough to prove that this “list of false teachings” is nothing but sheer nonsense. Many more claims are made there, but if I find error and falsehood in the first chapter of a book, common sense tells me that I should put it down because it is very probable that the rest will also be tainted with error.

That is a fine list. Really a remarkable job. Now all we need is for someone to put that information in video form – there’s not enough good apologetics videos on YouTube, and your list could be a fine contribution.
