Refuting Mormonism, preferably in Spanish

Hi, I have a friend who is being targeted by some Mormon missionaries (he is interested in a Mormon girl and she has told him that he has to convert for them to be together, you know how it is) but he is expressing reservations about everything (thank God). He is Catholic and his first language is Spanish.

Now, I don’t have much trouble refuting Mormonism, and I can speak decent Spanish, but refuting Mormonism in Spanish is a different story. I also have trouble even knowing where to start as there are so many problems with their theology.

I was wondering if there are any tracts or materials I can show him that are written in Spanish. If there are good, succinct tracts or pages that are in English I can probably translate them adequately, but it would be best for them to be in Spanish. And I would like them to be worded kindly, just plainly stating what they believe. Nothing like “Mormons are going to Hell” or anything like that.

Oh, and my husband and I are taking him to Mass with us tomorrow. This is perfect because they are having our ministry fair tomorrow with tables that showcase the 80+ ministries we have at our parish. I’m so glad he’s coming because he will get to see that he doesn’t have to become Mormon to have fellowship.

I would very hesitantly refer him to exmormon.org/phorum/list.php?2,page=1 Many members are atheists, but they are well-informed. There some who are very proficient in Spanish there.

Otherwise, our debating society at non-Catholic Religions might help with a referral to someone for an e-mail.conversation.

Just a search of online information, and use of electronic translating programs, if he knows some English. I do know that they mangle it badly, but if he already knows some English, it would be worthwhile.

There is a serious lack of information in Spanish, and we need materials in Spanish to stop their inroads with our Southern brothers and sisters.

Hmm, I don’t think I will refer him there. I want to help him in a positive way, if that makes sense. That site is extremely negative and atheism abounds. I think I will just try to find some things in English and translate them. He does know English as he has lived here for a couple of years, I just know that he would understand better and feel more comfortable with Spanish.

We really do need more Spanish materials. They are really wreaking havoc in South and Central America.

I wish I would have kept up on my Spanish. I was a Mormon missionary in the Dominican Republic which is Spanish speaking, but that was about 20 years ago.

Its also important that your friend knows his own faith well. The easiest Catholics to convert are those with a poor understanding of their own religion or those who are not living the faith. In addition to the basics - the Bible (especially the New Testament) and the Catechism, I think a basic knowledge of Church history and the early Fathers are helpful in refuting LDS claims, there must be resources on that stuff in Spanish. The Mormon religion is built around the false belief of a great apostasy and the failure of the church Christ founded on earth.

That is absolutely true. He is not catechized as he was only baptized as a baby and not raised regularly attending Mass. I am going to see if he wants to go to Mass in Spanish instead of English. I know he would understand it so much better. The only thing is that the Spanish Mass at my parish is at 1:00 and my husband has to work at that time. Maybe we can take him to another parish.

One more recommendation. The Catholicism dvd series by Fr. Barron should have a Spanish viewing option. Its a great series that will help him understand and get excited about the faith. Its a little expensive but maybe a local parish has a copy you could borrow.
