Oh, I see. This is one of the Sacred Traditions that is handed down to us from the early fathers. It also speaks about the nature of Jesus. Mary had vowed her life to God as a consecrated virgin. That is why she was so surprised when she was visited by the angel Gabriel. She was betrothed to Joseph, to be her guardian and protector, as all consecrated virgins of her age in that day. However, technically, a betrothal meant that she was already married, so why would it have been strange to her that she should be told she would concieve? If she were intending to have relations, would it not follow that she could easily become pregnant? The reason she asked “how can this be?” is because she never had any intentions of having relations.Actually i’m not too concerned what the other churches teach about Mary ; all i was trying to establish was WHY IS IT PARAMOUNT IN CATHOLIC TERMS for us to believe that Mary had no other children ???!
Also, one must wonder. After one has been espoused by the Holy Spirit and carrying the Holy Son of God, how could one consider reverting to fleshly relations?
I find that, most of the time, people that have trouble with this teachng about Mary are having trouble with accepting Sacred Tradition as a whole. It is more a problem of rebellion against the non-written deposit of faith.
