:confused:Hi I was wondering if listening to certain types of music is a sin specifically pop and to be even more specific Katy Perry what I have been reading is that it wouldn’t be a sin but listening to certain types of music can influence how you act and cause you to sin but as a devoted catholic I wouldn’t let music influence me. I do like certain christen singers but since I am still young I like pop too.

Hi Zooman, welcome to the forum.

I think people are completely mad when they say its sinful to listen to Lady Gaga and especially Katy Perry’s music; there’s definitely worse out there.

You should take care that certain types of music don’t affect your behaviour or provoke you to have very frecquent, impure thoughts. You were right all along, and you sound responsible enough to manage that.

So there’s nothing wrong, and never been anything wrong, with pop. Personally, I don’t like most Christian music. 😛

With “Last Friday Night,” Katy Perry just tied with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” for the most #1 songs from the same album. Katy Perry, of course (for those who don’t know this), recorded her first album as CCM:

Well, I wouldn’t call those people *mad. *There are singers who promote things that are unacceptable to our faith, both in their songs and in their lifestyles. Young people are often easily influenced and can start accepting a number of ideas without really noticing how they creep into their worldview.

Yep, exactly. It is their own sin to publish such things, but not the listeners. Just be mindful of what Contra has said. I would assume that it is the music that you like more than the lyrics anyway, which is usually the targeted audience of teenage music.

If we believe that it was a sin to publish some music and then we enjoy listening to it, then I think we are participating in the sin. We are to love the Lord our God with our entire heart, mind, and soul. If God was offended in the making of the music (by the sin) then we should too be offended.

How can we derive enjoyment from sin and not be sinning ourselves?

My personal opinion is that if you know the person is doing something very wrong and influencing more people in a negative way than positive, don’t buy any albums. It may or may not be a sin, but I wouldn’t put my money or support towards someone who is fueling decadence.

I personally can’t listen to most music that shows off immorality as good or fun - especially a lot of the sexualized music most teens are listening to these days. I can’t have a clear conscience knowing that I’m listening to something that encourages sin, even if it doesn’t influence myself. That’s why I just go to a good friend of mine who has a ton of music and I get anything I like from him.
 
This is a new dilemma for me as I’m in the process of converting to Roman Catholicism, I’m now looking at (and listening) to all my ‘secular’ music in a new and different light.

Whether an artist is mainstream or underground, the amount of anti-religious sentiment out there in music is quite a lot.

There are some songs in my collection I can no longer even listen to anymore, even though I still love the melody of the song, I now find the lyrics offensive.

And that’s what it comes down to, how can you celebrate and take joy in lyrical content, a message that runs counter to our religion and the Ten Commandments and pretend that nothing is wrong?

If you make an exception there, where do you stop?

I’m just converting now, and reflecting on my life and lifestyle, the amount of changes I’m going to have to make is going to be phenomenal and it is not going to be easy. But it’s my true want to sacrifice a little of my own personal freedom here and a little secular pleasure there to conform to God’s will. That is my ultimate desire, that comes before any music.
 
I tend to ignore modern teenage music to quite a degree, so I maybe don’t know quite how bad it can be.

I apologise for giving poor advice.

Depends on what kind of ideas the music is promoting as true. If the ideas are false and blatantly sinful, then the music is sinful. If the ideas are good and promote truthfulness, then they are good.
 
Personally I think it is hard to make a blanket statement. For example one of my favourite songs is DMX’s Lord Give Me a Sign- however I cannot stomach much of the filth in his earlier music. It is true however, that much of modern music is at best mindless drivel and at worst satanically inspired filth. Take anything by Rhianna for instance and especially her disgusting S & M, which is aimed at preteen and teenage girls.

I found that funny too. I don’t consider myself old, but I haven’t much love for pop music and never really have. In fact, I used to have a keychain that I bought at a concert. I said, “No, I’m not old. Your music really does suck.”
 
Pop is, in general, horrible music - there are only a few in that class I like and I’m 16.
