Hey, is there any sententia certa doctrines that were disputed?
but is there any that were sort of like downgraded?
If yes, can you give any examples?

And also the examples of sententia certa doctrines that were upgraded to de fide?

Besides, this is what I found in Dr. Ott’s Dogmas of the Church

De fide
Sent. certa
Scientia contemplationis
Scientia simplicis intelligentiae
Scientia futuribilium
Sent. communis
Sent. fidei proxima
Sent. communior.
limbus Patrum
Sent. pia et probabilis
Mediato in universali
Sent. probablilior.
Pius XII
necessitate praecepti

All of these without explaination, and google doesn’t “reveal all the answers”…

I’ve never seen an instance in which the Church has formally classified any doctrine other than De Fide. According to this article by Father John Trigilio at EWTN, all of these *sent. whatever *classifications are theological opinions. One theologian might classify something one way, but another theologian may not agree.

Dr. Ott does define his terms. Ron Conte reproduced that information in this thread.

But, I say again, all of this is theological opinion, and there is surely a lack of consensus on many issues. For example, in the 1800’s, I’m sure many theologians would have classified the idea of Limbo as sent. communis, while others would have argued for sent. certa. Today, I think it would be widely classified as sent. pia, at best (and probably sent. tolerata by many).

Ludwig Ott was of the opinion that this statement was Sent. Certa:
The Sacrament of Order can be validly received by a Baptized person of the male sex only (Sent certa).
*L.Ott, Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, Book IV, *¶ 6
Some years later, Pope John Paul II taught this as de Fide in Ordinatio Sacerdotalis. If anyone doubts that this is a *de Fide *doctrine, Josef Cardinal Ratzinger put the smackdown on doubt here.

If you have the book “Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma” by Dr. Ott, go to the INTRODUCTION.

Some classifications are given in Paragraph 4, “Concept and Classification of Dogma”, especially towards the end of that Paragraph – designated “3. Classification” ( bottom of page 5 in my book).

But, the most important definitions are in Paragraph 8. “The Theological Grades of Certainty” (bottom of page 9 in my book).

Hope this will help you.
