I was watching a programme where a guy got pretty worked up and was saying how absurd it was that an elderly, celibate man living in Rome should be explaining the morality of certain things (things that secular society disagrees with the Church on) to everybody else.

Any ideas on what would be good ways to answer this?

yea it is what is called an Ad Hominem IMO

and is a scenario where somone doesn’t have a valid argument so they attack the character of a person.

the Pope is there to feed the sheep, keep us living the Gospel and sharing the Truth - the Truth is what we have and he helps to make final decisions on things . this person seems to be just talking up some anti-catholic rhetoric. Pope Benny is an extremely smart man, speaks several languages , holds many degrees and is a very qualified Candidate for his position and he did a good job and continuing the works of BJPII

Turn the Telly off! You will be happier and more secure in your faith. If you have not, how about reading Pope Benedict XVI’s books on Jesus of Nazareth?

Thanks for the answers!

Though, I take this particular quote very seriously. Do you think that is the answer? I feel I want to see what people have to say and then get my answers together so that I’ll be prepared for times in my life when I am challenged. There’s anti-Catholicism everywhere. But should we stand up and face it and answer it or should we simply ignore it?

Thanks again! 🙂

(BTW: I don’t have a telly… I watch stuff after it has been broadcast. :D)

We should not pay for it, should we, actually? Enough will be delivered free of charge. As well, it should not affect our digestion. I think it is scientifically demonstrable that those who separate themselves from the paid gossipers (who would engage in as much even without being paid at all) are rather more satisfied on average. Our Lord left us peace. His peace He gave us - but not as the world gives. Where to find peace if not while comfortably ensconced in our homes? I choose to draw back just a bit, relax, pray and take comfort knowing that God is directing all things in some way.

Okay. 🙂

Note: All the stuff I watch is free of charge and adverts.

True enough, but rubbish is rubbish. I would suggest reading Catholic apologetics and other uplifting materials, so that you may respond when needed. Can you tune in or stream Catholic radio? Do you get EWTN? Immerse yourself in Catholicism and you will be much happier.

I’d just dig up some dirt on the guy. Who doesn’t do that in the media these days? 😛

The more the anti-Catholic media does this, the less credible they actually become and the more gullible their followers become.
