Hello all, (this is a bit long)
I’m a 21 year old college student (graduating next year) and am in a serious relationship with a wonderful 25 year old man.
We have known each other for 2 years, been dating for a little over a year now. He is my first and only boyfriend I have had (I do not date ‘just to date’, I only looked for potential serious relationships).
He just graduated before me (went to my university) and has a great job but wants to continue his schooling, while I want to work and pay off some of my staggering loans after college. This is cool, our plans match up well since we are both interested in moving to the east coast (we live on the west coast).
We have had time apart–I studied abroad in Europe for four months in the fall. While it was hard, we stayed in contact daily and somehow got even closer than before I left.
He is everything I have ever wanted in a man- religious, smart, funny, athletic, handsome, and so sweet. We go on dates to the ballet and theater, watch movies, have Bible studies together, discuss current news, and really enjoy each other’s company.
We are very compatible in religious beliefs, political opinions (though we disagree sometimes and have fun debates), similar views on raising children, etc. I’m in love and love him very much and vice versa. We are pretty good about sorting through disagreements and are supportive of each other.
He has discussed marriage with me, and I love the idea. Our goals are: get engaged this fall, he can apply to his graduate schools, and we’ll cement our plans on where we will end up moving by my graduation, and get married the next year before we leave, ideally.
Of course we want to go through pre-marital counseling and financial counseling before tying the knot.
We are trying to be as responsible as possible, we put in a real effort not to rush our relationship and keep our heads clear (not always easy with him, he’s so great to me).
However…my mom has adamantly told me not to ‘get any ideas’ and that she does not want me to get married until I am at least 26. My dad appears to be in agreement with her. I have not told her our future ‘hopes/plans’ because I really do not want to start an argument, but I know I will have to talk to them sometime soon.
I want to do what my parents say, but I know life is very short, and after I graduate I would like to cement our commitment to each other and start creating a life together. It is frustrating, because nobody says anything to him because of his older age, but they think I am naive because of mine. My boyfriend and I just don’t want to date for five or more years for no reason other than ‘just because’. That seems silly to us.
I got in an argument with two close friends yesterday that said that I don’t ‘know anything’ because I have only been with my boyfriend, and insist I need to ‘sample the goods’ before marriage, and ‘browse the menu options’ before settling. I was firm in telling them that I do not need to date/sleep around with various guys just so I dont “wonder” about the “options I missed” when I’m married (other parts of their argument were that I would always “wonder” if I didnt see other guys). Its just frustrating to be told over and over that I don’t know anything because I’m so young, even by my friends.
Before I met my boyfriend, I prayed to God one night I was lonely, and literally the NEXT day I met my boyfriend and he asked me for my phone number. I am living my life for God and myself, not for my friends and family, although I do listen to their opinions.
My ultimate question is, what should I do about my parents? I could never go through with a marriage without their support, that would break my heart. How can I convince them that I know what I’m doing and I’m not rushing into this? I don’t know what else I can do…
