Hello all,
I’m in a bit of need for some advice for my friend and I. We are both freshman college students at a decent Catholic college. We’ve had similar social groups thus far and gotten to know each other fairly well. There were a number of things that happened, i.e., college drama that brought us closer as friends. We’ve spent a bit of time together and neither one of us wants to get involved in a relationship at this time for the obvious reasons.

It gets ‘better.’ This girl likes me…alot. And not just in a really superficial room. When she and her friends were going through some tough times, I was there to talk to her and help her through them-as any friend would do. Now we talk to each other fairly often and we’ve had an above average number of confidential conversations. The problem is thus. We get along great and our personalities are very compatiable. But therein lies the problem. We are by no means exclusive but how do we put some kind of distance between us? This is happening and I recognize perfectly well that getting into a relationship at this time in life is just stupid and unfair to the other. If I can hardly support myself as a student, how can I take care of her? I view courting as something that has marriage as its end…I understand that pointless hook-ups are little more than an occasion of sin. Also, this girl is slightly more…shall we say, of the world than I would categorize myself as. We also have fairly different backgrounds in terms of education, family size/life, etc. As an end note, I’d like to get her some reading material on relationships, purity, devotion to Mary, etc and would like some advice.

So, what do you suggest I do at this time?

Whoo hoo!! Look who’s being waaaayyy more mature than most kids his age. I have no advice, only kudos. 🙂

Are you open for a relationship, but just not with this girl?

Well…at this time I’m not looking to be in a relationship. Whether or not there will ever be anything between me and her is a question I don’t know the answer to…but I doubt there ever will be, though I don’t know that she feels the same way.

From your post, I am guessing you all just met last semester. Let things roll as they will. You are young (I wish I could be 18 again) and you will most likely have many loves before settling down. Try not to think about it too much. If you are not an “official couple”, treat your relationship that way. I think it is cool that you are not looking for a big-time relationship. Study!

My advice to anyone whether they are interested in a “relationship” or not is to go out in groups. Avoid situations where you are one on one. This way you will be able to keep your friendship and avoid taking any irrevocable steps you are not ready for. 👍

You don’t say - are you planning on going in to the service?

I’d follow acspomer’s advice. If you do, you’ll both have a chance to find out more about each other and where you want to go with your lives, without being tempted by being alone together.

At this point, if you make a go/no-go decision about her, you could either be throwing the baby out with the bathwater, or jumping in to something you’re not ready for. So take your time.

You will find couples on these forums who have married in college, and who have gotten engaged in college and waited to marry until after graduation. They figured out what was right for them, and so will you.

And I echo DakotaGirl’s comment!

God bless you,

Ruthie

It’s not clear to me from the above - are there pointless hook ups?

keep it simple. If something starts to develop then cool flow with it, but if its not feasible at this time ie: Tests, heavy study load, then tell her right out.

Believe I was in a like situation and I just told her right now wasn’t the best time. she kissed me on the cheek thanked me for not leading her on and gave me her number should things change.

That was one hell of a day!

If she is way into you, and you are not really into her…I’d try to find a tactful way of saying that. The truth may hurt, but it’s better than continuing a relationship of some sort, with her maybe thinking it could lead to a dating relationship. I don’t think that you need to be able to ‘take care of’ a woman, before considering dating. It is 2009, you know. lol I think it’s chivalrous of you to have those thoughts, but I don’t think that dating in and of itself requires a man to be in a position to ‘take care’ of a woman. If you are looking for marriage as an end to any dating relationship, it just doesn’t sound like you are feeling it much for her. That’s ok. It’s ok to not want to pursue something with her…but you need to make that known, in a diplomatic way. Just so she doesn’t think there is hope for a future with you.

Good luck & God bless!
