There have been a few threads lately about secular music — what music might be “OK” and what might not be. While no one can probably offer any definitive answer to such a question, I would like to recommend a music radio show by a priest named Rev. Msgr. Jim Vlaun called “Religion and Rock.” Msgr. Vlaun is a great priest, a really good man and he has a love for music.
On the show “Religion and Rock” he picks a theme. For example, “thankfulness,” “responsibility” or “joy.” He then plays songs by various secular artists, each of the songs has a tie to the theme for the show. In between songs, he shares stories about his own life or about his journey in the priesthood, and often he explains why he chose to play the song—using it as a springboard to discuss the faith or life in general.
It’s not just a radio show, it’s also a podcast. You can find it on the official Telecare site here, or you can get it via iTunes or any other podcast program you might have.
Anyway, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a lot of fun for Catholics that are also rock fans and very useful for reflection.
