Ok, I finished Red Dead Redemption. Maybe I didn’t recognize the above characters you mention, but I didn’t remember seeing them again after that opening scene. If that’s the case, then the game starts out with the anti-religious bent and doesn’t do a whole lot to portray a minister better. Are they in “stranger” missions?
At one point, Marston assists a couple nuns from the guy “Irish”. This is the dialogue exchange:
Marston: You been workin’ like a weasel on my behalf. Bushwhackin’ defenseless ladies of the cloth? You must have been raised on sour milk, Irish.
Irish: What are you talkin’ about? I’m a good Catholic boy.
Marston: You’re a booze-blind coward.
Irish: And you’re a hypocrite, Marston. You’ve robbed just as many innocent folks as me.
Marston: I tried to rob only those who had more than they deserved.
Irish: [Lord’s name in vain],
the church has more money than everybody. In this little exchange, it goes from Marston defending the nuns, to Irish being a criminal “good Catholic” hypocrite, to what sounds like a pot-shot at the Church and money.
Earlier, Marston (the “flawed hero”) has this exchange with Bonnie:*Bonnie: Let’s get going. Before the weather gets any worse. That sky don’t look good. I’m starting to think somebody up there’s conspiring against me. **Are you a religious man?
***Marston:
Not in any real sense. Sometimes I tell myself things happen for a reason. Like what brought me here was fate come-a-callin’. But nobody made my path but me.
Bonnie: We all need to look for answers somewhere. Some in big ol’ books. Some in big ol’ bottles of whiskey.
Marston:
Believing in some kind of divine purpose ain’t gonna get me my wife and kid back. Past is who we are, Miss MacFarlane. And there ain’t no changing that.
Faith is a luxury I can’t afford.I took that as another snub at religion.
All the same, the game pretends like there’s some kind of providential something-or-other behind things I guess. Quite a number of the
mission names are plays on Bible verses, such as “Father Abraham,” “And the Truth Will Set You Free,” or “The Prodigal Son Returns (to Yale)”.
I hardly played any of the side missions or the ones with “strangers.” I did do one in Blackwater where some woman is praying in what looks like a Protestant church (because there’s no crucifix or stained glass) but she crosses herself, so I’m not sure what to make of that - maybe the writers don’t know one Christian from another. On the other hand, her follow-up stranger mission at the cemetery seems to insinuate the woman was a con artist. It was cryptic to say the least.
All in all, not a very favorable game to Catholics from what I could tell. But not too openly anti-Catholic other than the one pot-shot. Generally, religion is kind of a ho-hum, it’s for some, not for others, whatever floats your boat, kind of thing. Plus there’s the moron pastor at the beginning (unless he was a con man as the other poster said).
Oh, and I thought the ending was t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e, and right now I consider it the most over-rated game I’ve ever played on PS3. It might be the only one I played all the way through and didn’t really like. This is pretty much most missions: Ride-your-horse and follow the other person. This consists of holding the X button and following the other person, sometimes for several minutes on a dirt road. The scenery is nice, but after the 30th time, it’s a little boring. Plus the dialogue is always, “Life is tough. I used to ride with Bill. When are you going to take me to Bill?” every time. Oh, and then most missions end with the same shootout format every time.
