I was wondering if anyone had heard of a religion of violence. Before anyone says Islam I don’t mean a religion with violent tendencies but a religion that believes its god/gods can only be worshipped with war and bloodshed. Anyone heard of this? I read about one in a fantasy book and wondered if it had any basis in fact.

The closest one I can think of is the cult of Kali. Her devotees were called thugees, where the word thugs originates from. These devotees would roam around killing people of honor of Kali, the goddess associated with violence and sexuality.

When I saw the title of the thread, I though it was a thread about Islam.

Don’t worry friend, I don’t subscribe to that nonsense.

Yes but weren’t they worshipped in temples? The “religion” I am talking about viewed the only acceptable sacrifice as skulls of slain warriors and the only acceptable worship slaying your enemies.

Maybe the Norse god Odin and Valhalla (wbere those who died on the battlefield went to)? Or maybe the Aztec cutting out of human hearts? 🤷

I think the Norse one is as close as it gets in our world(and thank God for that). The Aztecs just thought they were feeding the sun so it wouldn’t go dark.

I’ll go along with the Old Norse guess, primarily Asatru. I’ve read conflicting information, some claiming that the Blot was only animal sacrifice, while others have claimed that animal sacrifice replaced human sacrifice.

It would be difficult to know for sure. I might be incorrect, but I don’t believe that they left behind any written records. Many of our knowledge and insights into ancient European cultures came directly from the Roman historians and observers (like Tacitus) whose government either occupied or came into close contact with the ancient pagans.

Moloch required the murder of ones own children in sacrifice to him.

Some Asatruar (people who follow Asatru) still worship with animal sacrifices, but this is rare. I know because I looked into following this religion and read books by people who practiced it. However, I was not present at one myself.

Sounds a little bit like the ancient gallic/brythonic/“celtic” bloody gods - eg cruach and so on.

It may be nonsense in our ultra liberal modern society, but never forget that the earliest Christian areas, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey, Egypt and all of North Africa - areas that were originally converted peacefully by St. Paul and the Apostles- were converted to Islam within 200 years, not by evangelization, but by the sword. One had a choice, professing ones faith to Allah, or death. About half of the indigenous population was put to death during their conquest by the Arabs.
So don’t avoid the issue!!!

Not to mention the Koran specifically makes open ended mandates of violence against infidels. I’m glad that “Moderate Muslims” exist, but their scriptures don’t support their positions.

Ok thanks for reassuring me. I am not glad that this existed but at least it is not how I read.

read the quran and hadiths, they have elements of violence. only just stating a fact. but also the bible does, but that can be explained 🙂

Not to sound too melodramatic, but in a way, our ‘modern’ society sacrifices our own children for the supposed luxury of a life of ease. The statistics on abortion are truly a sign of an evil worship of something.

I agree. It’s sad time in our life when we can kill unborn children with no consequence, but can go to jail if we kick a puppy. (Not that I would advocate puppy kicking. I’m just saying animals have more rights than an unborn human)

Sorry to break my silence on Islam. I didnt answer all the other posts on islam because this thread is not about islam. However this comment crossed the line.

So our violence is all right but theirs isn’t? I’m quite sure theirs can be explained too. Unless I missed the Quran verse on baby killing being a required rite of worship like the religions in this discussion.
