Religious discrimination at work

I need some help! For the last 1 1/2 - 2 years at the bottom of my emails at work, I put:

Jezu Famu Tobe
Jesus, I Trust In You

This is at the very bottom after my name and contact information.

I have received nothing but positive feed back from people in that time period. Yesterday our new HR Director sends me an email saying that although she shares my beliefs I have to remove that from my emails because it might offend someone.

My response was: You are kidding. Right?

She said no that she feared offending someone and that there have been law suits over stuff like this.

I did a Google search and couldn’t find one case relating to something like this. Everything was regarding other religions being harassed and etc.

I really don’t want to remove my little homage to our Lord from my emails. I also can’t afford to lose my job if it comes to that.
I might say,

"It is good for company morale to be be able to let other people know about yourself. I myself would not be offended if there were other people of a different religion to write a signature much the same, actually it’d be just the opposite, I’d be delighted to know that about a co-worker, and possibly even offended at the thought they felt they could not reveal that.

Before any respectable lawsuit should be filed, the person who feels offended should first take their grievance to their supervisor or HR. If the problem is made known, then appropriate measures should be taken.

So while I can understand that view, I feel I should let my dissenting view be known, that I feel that this is not a good move for the company. It stifles acceptance of diversity. It chills the atmosphere of a personable atmosphere, when the benefit of the doubt favors that co-workers will be offended, when I feel it is better to favor an approach of the benefit of the doubt that co-workers will not be offended, unless a worker makes it known.

On a final note, I’d like it to be known that this policy offends me, in case being offended may have any bearing on policy decisions."

jmcrae - I followed your link and read your conversion story. What a touching and inspirational story. I so glad you became Catholic!

I grew up Methodist and married a Catholic girl in 1987. I became Catholic when my 2nd daughter got baptised in the summer of 1992. I had been attending Mass with my wife and daughter anyway and decided I might as well join them. It wasn’t until the fall of 2005 that I dug deep into the Church teachings that I fell in love with the Catholic Church.

Thanks for sharing…

Unless you work for a religious organization you should not have anything relating to religion on e-mails that are going out with your company’s logo, name or any other identifying marks. Save your religious remarks for your personal messages. You don’t have to advertise your faith; God knows how you feel and He’s the only one who matters.

You have to understand that it is most important not to offend our Muslim, etc. brothers.
It would be ok, though, to put Allah Akbar in your sig because you wouldn’t be offending anyone but Christians.
that’s seriously not true…if it deals with one religion, most companies will have a policy for all religions. My company will not let anyone have a religious sig representing any faith.

Why would Christians be offended by Allah Akbar? It means ‘God is great’. Well, isn’t He? 🙂

Seriously, it is a really sick world if people can get OFFENDED because other people have beliefs… 😦

I agree…and I think living our your faith by example at work is the best witness…How many people won’t go the extra mile to help others, because it’s ‘not their job,’ or how many people are arrogant when they start reaching a certain income bracket? Love like Christ…work like Christ. That’s my motto. I have always thought working for Relevant Radio would be cool, because you certainly wouldn’t be stifled there!
It is unfortunate, but if the company doesn’t allow that type of expression…you have to abide.
