That I don’t doubt. But, When the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, did they act as though suffering from epilepsy and scream random words? I can think of a certain boy who was ‘‘thrown to the floor’’ somewhere in scripture. He was called possessed. Surely if the Apostles had this reaction to the Spirit they would have been:

-Unable to preach
-Accused of being possessed and exorcised or killed outright

EDIT: Although I worded this as facts it is just my opinion of the situation, I claim no special knowledge on the subject.

God Bless

Peter
No, I think the Apostles were inspired and started speaking languages they did not know which the people around them did. Those people realized that these men would not know those languages of themselves, and were therefore amazed.

I could be wrong though. 😉

Thats exactly how I envisioned it 👍

I made this comment on another thread:

I believe what a “Born Again” feels after the believer’s prayer is the exact pull that he asks for. “Jesus come into my heart” causes just that. I believe at that moment, the Holy Spirit enters them as requested and starts to pull and tug at the person in a direction that would lead them to the greatest access of the Lord’s grace. (The Sacraments)
I think the FEVER (as I call it) of wild behavior of Evangelicals is a sort of running in circles in search of Grace like searching your house in a panic for car keys that just aren’t there. While some people can keep racing around the house for their whole lives and think they are getting as far as possible, most will crash their faith or decide to look elsewhere. I think that is part of why Evangelicals are notorious church shoppers.
We can hope that they will find the Catholic Church and take a deep breath of fresh air.

That’s how I see it, but who knows. It could be authentic in some other way, in their mind, demonic, or any number of things.
It’s probably harmless and proves little if anything.

I picture Christ and the Apostles as pretty peaceful in their spirituality unless they were ticked off.
That’s just how I see it.

“I mean the evangelicals who start shaking and running around screaming like rabid animals”

LOL!
Are you arguing that they don’t? You must admit that there are some who act as if they are insane. I didn’t say ‘‘ALL EVANGELICALS ARE RABID ANIMALS-SLAY THEM WHEREVER YOU FIND THEM AS YOU WOULD A RABID DOG!’’ I find their actions (by this I mean those particular ones) distasteful. It would be wrong for me to apologise for a statement that I am not sorry for. However if there are any evangelicals on this forum who feel I crossed the line and you were truly offended by my remark then I apologise, and I can’t do better than that.

Maybe there are, but from the hundreds that ive seen in my life not one made me think of a ‘rabid animal’. yeah its wierd, but certainly not to the level that you have implied. not to me at least. you see what you want to see.

afterall, in the philippines there are CATHOLIC charismatic groups who behave in such a similar manner. speaking in tongues and all.

Well I’m guessing you live in America. Over here its a relatively new thing to see people doing things like that in a church. My reaction may be a little extreme to some but it does shock me.

Just because they’re Catholic it doesn’t stop psychological effects, who knows they could be under the same ecstatic delirium (that probably is not the right term but I think you get what I mean) that certain evangelicals experience. As a Catholic I wait for the Church to verify things, and from what I’m aware there are a number of movements in the Phillipines that at best are straying from Church teaching and at worst are heresy.

Seems to me Agnos as if your the one chiding LDN. Leave it alone, it is what it is.
No worries, they feel I stepped over the line, I don’t, as long as it doesn’t degenerate on either side into childishness its OK by me.

Actually Water started it. I just followed up, to see what the admins would do. But it seems their strict policies are mainly triggered by the smallest anti-catholic remarks, and hardly by glaring anti-protestant, anti-muslim, anti-atheist ones, whatever. be charitable to catholicism but we can all be a little nasty to everyone else. 😃

it was an experiment on my part har har har. please carry on. 😃

Agnos, want to talk about Catholic bashing? And you wonder why Catholics feel the way they do…I started a thread on one example…

Did you report my post? Because I think thats why the mods swoop on the anti Catholic posts, if you were really offended then report it.

I don’t find your being a trouble maker too funny.

Is the ecstatic experience of protestants real (I mean the evangelicals who start shaking and running around screaming like rabid animals)? I have seen this in numerous other religions and I was wondering what sets their experience apart from the ecstatic trances entered by Masaai, or Dervishes, or Hindu mystics, who all report similar things? Spontaneous movement is even reported in Chinese martial arts, people being possessed by the spirits of legendary warriors etc. From a Catholic standpoint, just what is going on?

Also, the whole ‘‘talking in tongues thing’’. Am I way off here or when the Lord promised we would be able to speak in tongues did he mean real languages or the gibberish they spout? I have never heard of these people speaking in a real language that they had no previous knowledge of.

God Bless

Peter

The tongues means real languages. Many of these people are simply insane and fake things thinking that they are real experiences. This is a common example of Protestant Extremism.

Are you talking about the group that are laughing until they collapse? Or barking for hours?? (The so-called “Toronto Blessing”??
I have seen some tapes of this, and it is shocking, IMO, to see people behaving this way. Especially in the name of Christ!!
I wouldn’t put it in the same category as “ordianry” charismatics, however. Although I’m not charismatic, and I don’t believe in it in today’s world, I think that there are many good Christian people (Catholic, Protestant, whatever) who are such.
But I personally think that the hysterical barking/laughing bit is pathological. Doesn’t make them all bad people; just emotionalism running wild. :twocents:

True…The Catholic Church does seem to exert a little more control over things like this. I could be wrong, but that is my observation…
When I was younger, my own Methodist tradition did a better job of handling this kind of thing, than at present. Though I can’t imagine the extremes of some groups ever getting much of a following.

I do think its important to distinguish between groups of people though.

Well, the Apostles on Pentecost must have been behaving at least somewhat oddly. They WERE accused of being drunk, remember - that wouldn’t have been the case if they’d spent the whole time simply conversing calmly in recognisable foreign languages and nothing else. 🤷
