Religious Education at Home

My wife and I are getting ready to start homeschool with our 4 year old daughter. We want to include religion in her curriculum but have not had much luck finding anything written for her age. Our thought, instead of trying to find a published religion curriculum, is to take a story from her children’s Bible every day and read and discuss it. We also thought about finding a color page for her to color that would go along with the story.

Does anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions?

Ignatius Press has their Image of God series that is very good for this age group. The 2nd Edition was updated with the new Missal.

They have Preschool and Kindergarten, “Who Am I?” student and teacher workbooks/manuals.

I second 1ke’s recommendation for the Image of God pre-school texts.

Reading through the Bible is good, too. We did that with our daughter using the Golden Book Children’s Bible (since it contains a more substantial portion of the Bible than most other children’s Bibles). We only got halfway through the first year, so we’ll do the second half this coming year.

I recommend doing some of both. It’s good to get our children familiar with the Bible. But then it’s also good to get our children familiar with all the other parts of being Catholic (the Creed, Mass and the sacraments, living out Christian teaching, prayer, etc.).

What homeschooling curriculum are you using? Is it a specifically Catholic one? Most of the Catholic ones I’ve seen include the religious education piece.

Thanks for the recomendation. This looks like what my wife and I have been looking for. We looked for a Catholic specific curriculum but couldn’t find one we liked. We decided on a combination of A Beka and Cornerstone but, then, wanted to add religion to it (since that’s our main reason for homeschooling). We’ve found many religious course curriculums, but couldn’t find anything that was specificly Catholic. Image of God looks to be exactly what we were hoping to find. Thank you so much.

Joe, not to hijack the post here but what curriculum do you use? I am shopping around with hopes of starting a very basic, hands-on curriculum at home in the winter. Do you have a recommendation?

Right now we are using “Mother of Divine Grace”. They use the Golden Children’s Bible for Kindergarten and take you half way through it over the course of the year, but then they switch gears to the Lives of the Saints for first grade. So we’re planning on finishing what we started. But we’ll still do the Lives of the Saints and we are also going to bring in the “Faith & Life” series.

We like the curriculum, but we are looking at ways to supplement because our daughter is fairly bright and can handle the extra work.
