American religious leaders from many groups, including Catholic bishops, have signed this letter, a letter which reaffirms their committment to the preservation of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This, the letter explains, is a great good in itself and serves the good of society in innumerable ways. This statement represents a consensus among religious divides, as an article from the Catholic News Agency reporting on this letter explains. This letter came out the same day oral arguments in the Proposition lawsuit were set to begin. See
