“Which “religious liberty”, by the way, Pope Leo XIII termed “insanity”, or words to that effect,”

was the words I read on another forum. So what is the reasoning? I have my own reasons but I would like other opinions or official Church documents as to why.

Actually I don’t agree. We must be free to choose any religion even if it’s not the right one.

While the SSPX is the only source I can find that claims the term was used (they said it was in Gregory XVI’s Mirari Vos), I cannot find it in the encyclicals they claimed it was used in.

The concept condemned in the encyclical however is the belief that one religion is as good as another. Religious Indifferentism.

However, the idea of freedom of religion in the secular sense is not incompatible with Church teaching, as forced conversions are not licit, and Thomas Aquinas has taught that one must not go against their conscience:

[C]onscience is nothing else than the application of knowledge to some action. Now knowledge is in the reason. Therefore when the will is at variance with erring reason, it is against conscience. But every such will is evil; for it is written (Romans 14:23): “All that is not of faith” - i.e. all that is against conscience - “is sin.” Therefore the will is evil when it is at variance with erring reason. (ST I-II, Q19, A5)

There are many reasons for religious liberty being insanity, and Catholicism absolutely necessarily being the religion of the state and the religion all are encouraged to – for the sake of their immortal soul and eternity! 🙂

After you die, you go to Heaven or Hell – everyone in both places is effectively Catholic in that, Catholicism is reality. The world in this life is effectively Catholic too – It is the one true religion, there is no other.

So Catholicism is the one religion of acknowledgement of reality. 🙂

Just as we would call someone who said 2+2=5 mad, so to is it madness to say people are free to choose 2+2=5. While one cannot generally -force- people to understand something against their own bad will, that does not take away from the fact that to -not understand- that Catholicism is the true religion is always deeply flawed in some way, a kind of insanity – all the more especially since the laws of the Faith are written in the heart of every man by God, and man is constantly prompted by God in the conscience to come to this knowledge.

Is it not a kind of insanity to choose Hell instead of God?

So, to choose another religion is to choose a false reality – insanity. To pretend all religions are equal is to choose insanity. To treat all religions on an equal basis – insanity. Only one religion is of God. 🙂

Religious liberty is another name for liberty to sin.

Of course one cannot use immoral means to bring people to true religion, so in that sense there is liberty – but in most other senses of the idea there is not.

‘Heresy is from the Greek word meaning “choice”. . . But we are not permitted to believe whatever we choose, nor to choose whatever someone else has believed. We have the Apostles of God as authorities, who did not. . . choose what they would believe but faithfully transmitted the teachings of Christ. So, even if an angel from heaven should preach otherwise, he shall be called anathema.’

St. Isidore of Seville

Greetings and peace be with you Shin;
Just as we would call someone who said 2+2=5 mad, so to is it madness to say people are free to choose 2+2=5.
Mathematics offers a very real means of proving truth, I believe it is madness to assume that the Catholic Faith offers the same kind of proof as maths.

Religion is more to do with faith and belief, hence a lack of proof, try proving to an atheist that God exists.

In the spirit of searching for God.

Ah but the proofs exist, they are simply resisted for reasons which are not virtuous. 🙂 They are as certain and sure as 2+2=4.

All you have to do is look at history, and look at the world and all Creation to find and see God – and to look in your heart, to find Him too in His moral law as well as all His other goods.

And He gave us Revelation – He came to this world as Christ – this is true history, this is reality – the denial of which too – is a lie and insanity, a false history concocted by liars and madmen. 🙂
