The most commonly recognized logion of Jesus regarding what has come to be known as consecrated celibacy is Matthew 19:12
There are eunuchs who are born that way. There are eunuchs made so by others. And there are those who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the reign of heaven. The person able to receive this, receive it.
Since celibacy is both a God-given gift and a consequence of a personal experience of Christ’s love, the following sign and condition indicates authenticity: Those called to celibacy encounter Jesus’ love for then in such a way that it evokes a celibate response in love. In order to be true to Christ and true to who He is calling them to be, they believe that at some point they experience an existential inability to become themselves in any basic lifestyle except celibacy. In their deepest selves they are impelled in that direction although on a more superficial level they may experience resistance, fear, or volunatary acceptance of their celibate calling.
