How important is it for Saint’s medals and Crucifixes to be Blessed? Are they still considered to be a sign/reminder of one’s Catholic Faith even when not blessed?
Yes.Are they still considered to be a sign/reminder of one’s Catholic Faith even when not blessed?
The blessing of the priest or deacon given to a religious article, is the blessing of Jesus himself. This power and privilege is conferred at ordination. None of us are worthy of having this gift. It is privilege and honor to do this for people who ask that it be done. How important is it for Saint’s medals and Crucifixes to be Blessed? I think you have to have a Benedictine priest bless a St. Benedict medal. I have one, too. It is attached to my scapular so I’m wearing it, but I’m not sure how much good it is doing.I currently wear a St. Benedict’s medal and a medal that has St. Brendan on it (my patron). I have not gotten either of them blessed, but I want to. I guess I haven’t done it because I don’t really know how to go about doing it. I guess it feels, weird to me for some reason. I know that there is also a prescribed blessing for my St. Benedict’s medal.

Is there something different about the Benedictine blessing?I think you have to have a Benedictine priest bless a St. Benedict medal. I have one, too. It is attached to my scapular so I’m wearing it, but I’m not sure how much good it is doing.
Medals of Saint Benedict are sacramentals that may be blessed legitimately by any priest or deacon – not necessarily a Benedictine (Instr., 26 Sept. 1964; Can. 1168).
Getting an item blessed is no problem at all for Priests and Deacons. Just go up to a Deacon or Priest after Mass and tell them that you have an item that you would like to have blessed. They will sprinkle it with Holy Water, give the Sign of the Cross over it, and then pray a special prayer of blessing over the item. It really is a very moving and awesome thing. You can definitely feel the power of the Holy Spirit when the blessing of the Church is put on this item. After this is done the item is a Sacramental of the Church and deserves to be treated respectfully and reverently as such.I currently wear a St. Benedict’s medal and a medal that has St. Brendan on it (my patron).
