I have OCD and anxiety, sometimes I get terrible thoughts and hear terrible words while I’m praying the Rosary. Earlier today it was really bad while I was trying to meditate on todays mysteries, so much so I felt like stopping and even said Sorry to Our Holy Mother because I am afraid She thought it was me that thought those blasphemous things. I felt my Rosary wasn’t prayed right afterwards. Can anyone relate to what I’m feeling? I went to confession just last week and now I think I must go again. Sorry if I’ve put this under the wrong category.

I can relate, but not to the extent that you are apparently suffering. I too, get intrusive thoughts, often vulgar, but I manage to redirect myself. Perseverance is the key. Just remember that you are not conjuring these thoughts deliberately. You’re not committing a sin, so please do not let your anxiety take over. Our Blessed Mother appreciates you’re saying the rosary. She understands you, and loves you at a level that is unfathomable. Rest assured that you are doing nothing deliberately wrong, and that your prayers are being heard.

Oh, Therese, she knows it wasn’t you!

There’s no sin in having thoughts that you didn’t create or entertain. As has already been said, it would be good to see a doctor about this. You need relief from these fears.

Therapist. God bless you. Pray for St. Dymphna’s intercession.

I will keep you in my prayers. There is hope and OCD can be managed effectively. Please talk to a doctor about this.

I think this sounds like OCD. See a mental health professional about this and maybe for confirmation (eg official diagnosis). From your description, you seem to have one of the most common religious OCD experiences (eg Unwanted blasphemous thoughts etc) experienced by others with the same condition.

Like PaulfromIowa says. see a doctor. This is not a religious problem.

The advice given by the others is great, I concur on the idea of discussing the intrusive thoughts, while trying to concentrate, with a mental health professional.

When praying the rosary, as thoughts begin to intrude, take a moment to pause and ask God to cleanse your imagination and memory so that you may render a more perfect devotion to Him. Then continue. If yet these thoughts persist, then ask the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael to intercede and protect you as pray. This is most likely a physical matter although by battling through it spiritually you can also redirect yourself toward God so that these thoughts do not have a negative effect on your spiritual life. I pray this helps. Pax Christi!
