As many of you already know, I’m writing you here from Mexico. When I used to live in the US, I had a subscription to NetFlix where they had all kinds of Catholic movies to pick from.

Since then, I moved here, and I was able to get NetFlix streamed to my computer. However, I’ve found it’s not at all the same as in the US. I read in the US where even Patrick Madrid praised NetFlix for having a “plethora” of pro-Catholic movies, but that is in the US NOT here.

Well, although Mexico’s a Catholic country, I can tell you the number of religious films on NetFlix here is quite sparse. I’ve contacted NetFlix about geting more religious films. So, I see we got a religious film, since, “The Borgias”! Well, I’ve never actually seen it, but from the synopsis, it didn’t look like anything that would interest me.

I’m still subscribed to NetFlix on their streaming plan but admit I’m a serious Catholic and would like to see a Catholic film, even if it’s just once in a while. I’m tired of having non-Catholic, or worse, ANTI-Catholic films pushed on me like this.

I’m to a point where I’d just like to see some nice movies, not R-rated ones. I get tired of looking over even the pictures of other films that show all these things which are surely not pleasing to God. They maybe throw in a movie on the 10 Commandments, and that’s our token Christian movie.

So, my question is if such a thing exists where I could pay for some kind of movie service which I can get streamed to my computer to replace NetFlix, at a reasonable price. It’d be nice to have some Catholic movies, but I don’t think it’s pleasing to God for me to be endorsing, supporting a movie place that has perhaps 9/10 of its movies that are unpleasing to God.

Now, I don’t need precisely a place with exclusively Catholic films, but is there such a thing any more as a clean place for movies where there are G, PG, and Catholic adult films to stream to the house with NO R-rated stuff to peruse while looking through?

Have you looked into Amazon Prime? It’s $79 per year and there are thousands of movies and TV shows, plus you get free shipping on products shipped from Amazon warehouses. I have it and I love it. There are zillions of great documentaries about Catholic and other subjects, British comedies like Father Ted, just endless great entertainment. Also, YouTube and Vimeo have quite a few movies, many of them Catholic themed.

Just out of interest is the movie “For Greater Glory” a definitively - but possibly contentious - Mexican film, available there?

Piusmedia.com is awesome as far as authentic catholic films. However, they don’t have streaming. Check to see if they deliver to Mexico??

Sounds good, but it’s about 10 times what I was paying with NetFlix. I’ve been spoiled. I probably wouldn’t use it enough to make it worth it. I doubt places here ship, because the mail service here is just too unreliable.

Maybe YouTube and Vimeo…whatever that is.

I wouldn’t trust Mexican mail to return the movies even if they did ship here, actually, but it sounds interesting. Too bad I didn’t know about more of these options when I lived in the States. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I saw that movie in the US, I think maybe on the big screen. I bought a copy of it but gave it away. GREAT movie!

What??? Amazon Prime is $6.58 per month, or $79 per year. Your Netflix is ten times less?? Amazon has thousands of online streaming movies and TV you can watch over your computer.

Sort of off topic, but not really, could you suggest some of the great Catholic/ religious movies you’ve seen on Netflix? 🙂 thank you !!

Molokai
Keys of the Kingdom
Shoes of the Fisherman
On the Waterfront
The Cardinal
Au Revoir, Les Enfants
Going My Way
A Man for All Seasons
The Quiet Man
The Scarlet and the Black
The Son of Maryam (Iranian, made me cry)
The Exorcist

well, have you tried to rent movies on blockbuster? if they are like here, they are 15 pesos on tuesdays.

besides not all R movies are bad, there are some that even on catholicnews are not offensive, but just restricted to adults (A-III), or some adults (L) at least.

While not quite a streaming service, EWTN.com does provide free live streaming of what plays on their TV station. I’d recommend checking out their program schedule so u can see when their movies and other shows broadcast. U might find something u like. 🙂

Some other movies worth seeing are “Amazing Grace”, “China Cry”, “Not without my Daughter”. Those aren’t specifically Catholic but also good.

I have an AppleTV myself and because the service is still fairly new, it’s difficult to find some older films yet. Alot of the supply issues are not to do with any anti-religious thing, but with rights issues in particular countries(as well as the Release Dates, which Netflix is obliged to honour). It depends on weather or not the Film Studio has decided to provide a copy to the digital service.

So I would say if you know of a popular religious film and want it on the service you are using(or on the “store” of the country you are in), the best thing to do is to contact the studio that made/distributed it and ask them if they plan on releasing it on your specific service

There are many different digital download services and some of them are supported well by certain Studios and others are not.

The main ones I know of are:
iTunes(“AppleTV” is the set-top box version)
UltraViolet(Seems to be a popular service)
Netflix
Amazon
Big Pond Movies(in my country)

On iTunes the religious films I have, or know of, are:
Ben Hur
The Robe
The Ten Commandments
A Man For All Seasons
Black Robe
Brother Sun, Sister Moon
Jesus of Nazareth(Zefferelli’s classic TV mini-series)
The Nativity Story(available on the American store, but not on my version of it)
Amazing Grace

Some religious horror films:
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Exorcist

On Apple, If you are really desperate for the film and wish to purchase items from the international store(which you are legally allowed to), you must have an Apple account in that country and a credit card or an Apple gift card that comes from that country(can be purchased through Ebay importing).

One of the movies I saw on Netflix was a German movie about Hildegard von Bingen’s life. It’s called “Vision” in English, but the actual title is “Vision - Aus dem Leben der Hildegard von Bingen”. If you don’t mind watching movies with subtitles, I recommend it.

Oh, I saw that in the US. It was excellent, and no, I don’t mind movies with subtitles!

In Mexico, though, so many things are different. For example, some say we’ll have all these movies to choose from. Here, I can only tell you the selection is a lot less. We have only a fraction of the movies that the same company would have in the US.

One poster was saying I’d have thousands of movies to choose from. I don’t think so. Times I’ve had different services, I’ve never had thousands of movies here. In the States that might be the case. Here, no.

Those titles, for example, same company, I got in the US. Here, most of them are not available for streaming.
