I recently read somewhere that there are Church documents forbidding religious from wearing secular apparel.

Is this true?
 
No, it is not (based only on the fact that I know religious who are in good standing with the diocese yet who wear secular clothing).

P.S. - by “religious” I presume you mean priests, deacons, brothers and sisters?
 
Nah. Secular garb is all the rage now adays. Priests and religious often times prefer to be “equal” rather than stick to the true fact that, as St. Thomas Aquinas told us, the priesthood and religious life are higher states of life. I’m sure to get plenty of people telling me that this isn’t true though. :rolleyes:
 
As one person here has frequently remarked, the garb of holy poverty can get rather expensive.

I know an Eastern Catholic priest who does not wear clericals when he visits a certain Orthodox monastery, because when he tried bringing his bishop, they wouldn’t let him in the door!

I know a very strict traditional monastery that has a cattle farm and tractors, and certain labors, including driving the tractors, are NOT easily done in the habit, so they don’t even try.
