Religious orders and Sprituality/Charisms

Is there a list of orders (cloistered and non-cloistered - mainly women’s religious) and their spirituality/charisms (especially in layman - or would that be laity? - terms), and what is their main focus?

I know there’s…

Franciscans/Poor Clares (poverty, and animals)
Carmelites (solitude, silent prayer and meditation?)
Benedictines
Dominicans

I know there’s probably more, but I’d like a list of them, and just a few words of what their spirituality/charism is and what they focus on. I’ve been reading websites of some orders and their spirtuality/charism, but it’s mostly pages long info of their history, and a vague idea of what their charism actually is, or what they focus on.

I know there’s also 3rd order (discalced (?), SFO, OSF (not sure what that one is, but I’ve seen it), and so on).

As of right now, I’m rather curious about religous orders.
 
Take a look at the Online Guide to Religious Ministries (www.religiousministries.com.) It has a pretty extensive list. Click on the the order you want to review and you’ll get a brief outline that includes their charisms or apostolic work.

Nice thread Jennifer.

I belong to the Order of St. Augustine (OSA), the Augustinians.
We are a world - wide mendicant religious order founded in the 12th Century, at about the same time as the other four mendicant orders.
Our holy Father, St. Augustine, was the founder of western monasticism; and to this day, many religious orders follow the Rule of St. Augustine, including the Dominicans and the Norbertines. We also have Augustinian Nuns, and they follow the same charism and spirituality.

The charism of the Augustinians is “Community”, whether it be the monastery or friary we live in, or our parishes, our schools/universities, missions, etc, we minister in. It is about living Christ’s Gospel message of loving God and loving our neighbor/community.

Augustinian spirituality is more complex, and deals with many different aspects of our spiritual relations with our God and spiritual relations with those around us. The best book to help one understand this is St. Augustine’s autobiography, The Confessions. Augustine was a deeply interior man and he recognized that God’s Spirit also dwells in us; “You, Lord, are closer to me than I am to myself.” (also see 1 Cor 3:16)

If I wanted to sum it up in one phrase, it would be “So that in all things God may be glorified”

Some Benedictines have no outside apostolates other than their guest house. That is true of my community. Others run retreat centers, or colleges, or universities, or schools, or parishes, or publishing houses, or print shops, or some combination of all or some of those things.
