Hey guys, im a cradle catholic, but my parents are “born again”… My family says im TOO RELIGIOUS, what ever that means, they tell me i need to have a relationship with god, and not depend on “religion”… I told them a relationship is part of religion, but they tell me jesus never preached a religion. how do i go about this?? BTW, i found this on google…

Religion vs Relationship With Jesus Christ

Religion can be very different than having a Relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Religions are man made, and are based on trying to get to God through rules and regulations and works. Man made religions all are based on people’s efforts at reaching God and being made right with Him through their own efforts. God’s plan for man’s salvation and for being right with Him is told throughout the Bible, in the Old Testament and the New Testament. God’s plan is not based on people’s efforts and good works, but is based on His amazing Love and amazing Grace for us; His plan involved His precious Son Jesus paying the price and cost for our sins on the cross. You need to put ALL of your trust and faith in Jesus and in what He did for us on the cross, and not in any religion or in your own efforts. Simply put all of your trust and faith in Jesus, and accept His gift of salvation and eternal life, and experience the joy of having a right RELATIONSHIP of love with God.

How do we defend our beliefs??

Do You Know Jesus? — By Jim Blackburn

It is popular amoung some tele-evangilists to say the same thing(you don’t need Religion,Holiness,Piety etc.)you just need a relationship. We do and should have a relationship,a very deep and personal relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ but at the same time we have a communal relationship. We come together to worship God,to edify one another etc. These people do not know the diffinition of Religion.Scripture explains what "pure and undefiled Religion is.

Franky, that’s incredibly silly and would be funny, if it weren’t so sad. They’re into some sort of religious “cult” that wants to redefine terms and have special meaning to things. They are, in fact, being “religious” themselves when they say that. It’s like people who say, “I don’t believe in doctrines!” That, in itself, IS a doctrine. 🙂

People who say you can have a relationship with Jesus without religion are semantically joined to those who say you can have a relationship with your beloved without marriage. They claim that their relationship is “purer” and “more intimate” because it’s not corrupted by the trappings of ritual and structure.

Of course Christianity is at its most essential a relationship with Jesus-a relationship HE makes possible and we accept or reject. But why would you accept the relationship and then reject the God-ordained way of formalizing and celebrating that relationship? And the structure provides genuine strength and support at times when our human emotions are weak or failing–just like marriage.

First we must develop a strong understanding in ourselves. Then we will be strong enough to be Catholic without concern whether others agree or not.

Then we can confidently share of belief with support of 2,000 years of teaching.

I have found that with my family it is best to simply live as best as a I can be a defender of my Faith through the way I live my life. Kind of like St Francis of Asisi and his way of evangelizing though not the same (entirely).

thanks guys, i read that first link, and it was helpful… It just seems like every christian who is not catholic, wants to “evangelize me” LOL… I am ok at defending my faith, but i have much more to learn… I told my parents there is no way im turning my back on the catholic church, because i Firmly believe jesus did establich it

FrankyG, that’s the attitude! Ask 'em who founded their church and when? Protestantism didn’t begin till 1517 A.D., and was founded by a mere man vs. the Catholic Church which was founded by Jesus Christ. The Orthodox, which still have Apostolic Succession, broke off in 1054 A.D. But, since 1517 A.D., there have been literally thousands of man-made, doctrinally disunified, confused, disagreeing Protestant denominations. The Holy Spirit is not the spirit of confusion, but of unity. Unity, however, can never happen without truth and justice. No one gave any of these folks authority to found a church apart from the one founded by Jesus, which is His Mystical Body, according to St. Paul. 🙂

Maybe they need to know more about where the Bible came from? Would they watch a three-part video series on “Origin of the Bible?” If so, send 'em here:

I would say that your parents are woefully ignorant of what they speak. You can’t read the NT without coming to the understanding that the way Jesus wants you to worship is in HIS church. The book of Acts describes the beginnings of the church, and St Paul’s letters are directed to CHURCHES. This is just another sect of Protestantism that wants to interpret the Bible their way (which the Bible actually tells believers to NOT do) and make up the rules as they go.

It seems to me that ‘religion’ as well as liturgy is all GOD’s idea! As we read the Old Testament God is quite specific with the Isrealites on how to worship. And as we read in Revelation we see that our Catholic Mass is a foretaste of the divine liturgy and worship in heaven.

What is man-made is a do-it-yourself sort of Christianity which is whatever you want it to be with a ‘Christ’ of your own making. You are your own personal pope in a way. If you do not like the way folks run things at the non-denom down the street, you can hop over to another one that makes you feel better or even start your own ‘church’ with no rules, etc.

Where in scripture does it just say==believe and be saved? Even the demons ‘believed’ in Christ! We know where they are.

Our Lord instituted a Church on earth and it is His own Mystical Body. He gave His authority to Peter (the keys, or highest authority) and the apostles and holy scripture is clear on that. It was not a flash in the pan only for that small time period. No, the Church will last until the end of time and also with the authority Christ gave it.

It is extremely difficult for a ‘confirmed’ evangelical to come to the Catholic faith. PRAY! Live your life ever more exemplarily and answer questions when they arise as best you can. If you get picked on, quietly say that you are not criticizing them so please could they not criticize you. And through it all you will learn our faith better and come to love it and live it more.

thank you , all of you… I just dont know how they get all these ideas about our faith, and think they can interpet the bible on their own… i tried to speak with my dad about the eucharist, but he ended up getting very upset and offended… So hopefully I planted a seed and the holy spirit will do the rest

dont forget, a relationship is a two-way street… you can claim a relationship with a tree, or your X girlfriend, but not recieve any in return… Jesus said if you love me you will follow my commandments (all of them). So Jesus puts a qualifier. The absence of this qualifer, results in

Mat 721
"Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Keep Charging ahead Franky
God Bless U

Franky, keep this in mind… (Pope John Paul II said this.) We shouldn’t bother trying to correct every error, because there are so many, we would never finish. What we should do is teach Christ’s truths (like with the Eucharist), because when we do, grace accompanies the situation. And when that person is going to need that grace, it’ll be there for them. We just need to teach Christ’s truths, as taught by the Catholic Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ.

Maybe have your dad read an explaination of the Eucharist from Catholic Answers? Maybe print the short article out from the following link for him:

catholic.com/library/Christ_in_the_Eucharist.asp

And before you approach him with it, go before the Blessed Sacrament (with your friends, if possible!) and pray for him. Maybe fast a day, too, ahead of time. That’s a very powerful approach! And always act with humility.

God bless! 🙂

I think you really nailed the point home. I was having a discussion with a high school friend who claims that he loves Jesus, not religion. I have quickly learned to keep my mouth shut unless I have strong evidence to the contrary. 99% of the time if you let these people talk and just ask simple questions, they will contradict themselves and kill their own arguement.

Is a relationship started or continued by walking out the door if you don’t like things that the person you vowed to be joined to is dissapointing your personal expectations? (Reformation)

We see this today with spouses who leave their spouse and children. And in other ways.

That’s the question you need to ask your parents.
