Although it is still a few years off (about 1-1.5), DH and I are looking into relocating from where we currently are.
I will have my BA in English Education, and he an MPA.

What areas do you all recommend we look into relocating to?
We are currently in Erie, PA, which does not offer us much in either area, and we both want better for our children than what is offered around here.
My mother attended a teachers’ job fiar a year or so ago, and told me that many Western states are desperate for teachers. Is this

Thanks for your help all!

San Diego, Ca. Nice people, nice weather, lots to do, can visit Mexico, swim one day and be in the mountains in the snow within 1 hour the next, lots of Catholic churches…should I go on? Many schools and education opportunities.

If you are considering Southern California, I would recommend Temecula. It has good schools and the housing is considerably less than other parts of Southern California. It’s pretty with a rural / western feel to it, convenient to San Diego and LA, has a nice wine country, and fresh ocean air that makes its way through the Rainbow Gap.

One of my sister’s lived here for a while, she loved it.

I live in Tucson. It is a nice town, and I for the most part like it here. Vail, a suburb in SE Tucson is growing and from everything I hear has a great school system. In Tucson, I think it just depends on which school you are at, like most bigger towns/cities.

I’m not sure what else you want to know, but I’d be glad to answer any questions you can come up with.

Wichita, KS. Ok, I know, before you say… ugh, what’s in Kansas???

Honestly, compared to big citites, not much. But in Wichita you would be practically guarenteed a teaching position in great Catholic schools. They are all (and I don’t say that lightly) are orthadox. Our diocese is a tithing diocese (no tuition for parishners)

And the Wall Street Journal recently placed it at number 2 or 3(can’t remember) for mid-size cities for families and most real estate for the money. It’s around 400,000 people.

I just read my post and realized all my spelling errors. Sorry about that.

GEESH, I can’t type.

Hi, I’m a native of NW Pennsylvania, know Erie well, and currently live in Southern California (not far from Temecula).

I’d give just about anything to move back to PA. But my wife has 8 siblings who all live within 50 miles of here.

We just got back from 10 days there (flew in and out of Erie, actually). You have it good, really good there in terms of livability.

You’ve got a nice clean beach, an amusement park that you don’t need to pay for if you’re only taking kids and watching them ride, you’ve got community events galore. Go 5 miles from the center of Erie and you are in a pristine area of forests and farms and rolling hills. You can buy a really nice house for $100K. Here, you get a mobile home in a rough gang infested area for perhaps $270K, and a reasonable house for perhaps a half million.

If you come to SoCal you will immediately notice the following:

Crazy people on the roads. You will never be going fast enough, and if you slow down to e.g. turn into your driveway, the guy behind you will give you the finger for making him slow down.

I drove 50 miles to the Erie airport and it was actually what used to be called “a relaxing drive.” Nobody tailgating you. Nobody passing you around curves and when you’re slowing down for a school bus. There is no such thing here as a relaxing drive. Nobody goes out for a relaxing drive here, my blood pressure jumps 20 points when I pull out of the driveway, and another 20 points when I get on the freeway.

And the fun of going 90MPH bumper to bumper on the freeway. And if you leave a bit of room ahead of you (in other words, don’t tailgate) that opening becomes an opportunity for the “weavers” who want to go 120MPH but can’t. What fun. And, of course, the only way to get anywhere is on the freeway.

There’s trash all over the roads. Matresses, bottles, old TVs, you name it. I didn’t see a SINGLE piece of trash the 10 days I was visiting the Erie area.

Here, everybody is in a hurry, and woe to those who are not. The impulse to get more, buy more, have more, seems to be the entire reason for existence.

Good luck if you move, but I wouldn’t recommend moving here. I would, in fact recommend moving to Erie, for those that don’t live there 🙂

I grew up in Miami. And I live right in downtown Erie.
I realize that we have all kinds of nice stuff to do here, but there is not much by way of jobs for either my husband or I.

Keep looking! Especially since you have some time to do it. There may be jobs in somewhat related or even non-related fields that you could get.

My daughter just graduated from college with a BA, and had a heck of a time finding a job. She did find one in an unrelated area, but needs to live at home because she can’t afford even an apartment (currently running $1000-1800 / month in the “rural” area we live in, and more in the cities).

California is generally very expensive. San Diego and other metropolitan areas are especially high. I have family in SoCal, including San Diego. I enjoy visiting my family, butI hate to go there because of the traffic and air pollution. I live outside of Sacramento and recommend the Northern part of the state. It isn’t perfect and it isn’t cheap. Young people and those from other states find the housing market to be a daunting experience.

Teaching jobs are going to start opening up everywhere. I’m a baby boomer and I will be retiring in 2 to 4 years. My wife is a teacher and only three years my junior. She will be retiring a a few years as well. When the baby boomers start to bail in mass there will plenty of jobs in most fields. This will be the case in virtually every part of the county.

If you don’t mind the heat, many places in Texas would be acceptable since the cost of living is substantially lower than California. California real estate is anywhere from 2 to 4 times more expensive depending on the areas of comparison within the two states.

What about the “tri-state area” near Milford, Pa (extreme northeast corner of state, about 70 miles from NYC.) We just spent a night there on a road trip and loved the area. Very wooded, nice restaurants, a newly renovated Catholic Church (we were there for the Assumption), lots of antiquing, plenty of outdoor activities. I just saw it on a list of wonderfull small towns; I’d believe it.

Blessings!

I’m not a small town girl 😃 And, to me, Erie is a slightly larger town/small city.
So, I am looking for a metropolitan area. Thanks for you (name removed by moderator)ut y’all!

As I talked about in the OP, neither DH, nor I, have made any sort of final decision regarding a particular location. One of the main points, however, seems to be relocation towards the West.
My Dad is retired Military, and Colorado Springs is the place I consider my “hometown”, so there is a draw, for me at least, out West. DH is an avid outdoors men, so he’s all for it (elk hunting, you know)

I am more than likely going to resurrect this thread on a regular basis to ask about specific locations. If you don’t have info on a location, but know someone/place that would, please point me in that direction?

That being said… Lincoln, Nebraska? I lived in Omaha for a few years, and that was…ok. I think my parents lack of enthusiasm about having to return to Omaha leaked into my lack of fervor for the location. I don’t recall ever actually spending time in Lincoln, but I know we drove through it, once or twice…
I know they have a wonderful diocese, steeped in Traditionalism (yay!) and that they ranked number 40 for best towns to live in… but what are some local thoughts? Cost of living? What is the college atmosphere like? I would eventually be obtaining a Masters Degree, and DH is pursuing a Law Degree. UNL Law is ranked as a top tier school 👍 , so Lincoln may possibly be a contender.

Thanks y’all!

Well i live in florida and its very rough here, first the pay stinks, and its not any cheaper to live here then Pa.
I moved here from Allentown , Pa. and would love to go back so much more to offer up north. But my high school kids don’t want to move. I truly miss it so much, Schools here are very poorly run.
Bless you whatever you decide.

I actually lived in SoFla for 4 years and loved it. I am a big city girl, and Erie is entirely too small and killin me 🙂

And the FL local we are looking at is FSU in Tallahassee, which I have heard nothing but good things about (esp. since a lot of my friends graduated from there)

Tallahassee is not bad. State capitals always seem to have some interesting jobs available (with your dh’s MPA and soon to be JD, he should be in great shape.) FSU is an excellent school, and you can’t beat the winters - very different from Erie! You’re also not that far from all that Florida has to offer (St. Augustine - very cool), Disney (my kids, grown now, are still Disney nuts) the fabulous beaches (Panhandle beaches are best, I think) and the seafood.

We know a lovely young couple who just completed their Ph.D.s in evolutionary biology (mainly work with frogs and other critters) who are orthodox Catholic and already have tenure track positions awaiting them at FSU (currently doing their post-docs in CA) and my daughter and SIL have a possibility of moving there, as well down the road a bit.

Good luck with your search.

PLan on making at least $500k a year if you want to live within an hour of the beach/work. If you make any less than that you will be living in the middle of the Mojave desert.

I applied for a job there (Aerospace Engineering) and realized I would never be able to afford a house (even in the desert). I could buy a sailboat and live in the harbor, but that would be the only way I would own my home.
