What can you all tell me about Tucson, AZ?
I moved to Tucson about 2 years ago. Tucson proper is a little scuzy and if you like the hippy type lifestyle (oregon, boulder, CO etc) then there are some parts that are like this. I work for Raytheon which emloyeed about 12000 people here. Unfortunatley not many of these people have settled inside Tucson but have started communities such as Vail to live in. These outlying communities are pretty nice and have pretty good schools. Most of the Catholic schools cannot be called Catholic. I attend a Latin Mass Community and most of the parents homeschool for this reason.

Have considered Denver? The bishop is pretty orthodox and it is a great town.

Good luck!

You had mentioned Tucson, so I’ll give you my two cents on it. I grew up in Lancaster PA and would love more than anything to go back that way. Having said that, if you are looking to move somewhere out west that’s affordable and not too huge (i.e. Phoenix) then Tucson isn’t too bad. Like PP said (thedavidwilson), downtown Tucson is gritty and the schools are pretty bad, but if you’re willing to live in the far northwest (Oro Valley, Marana) or far east (Vail) there are some nice places.

Building has been going way too fast here, so in 1-1.5 years I think there will probably still be lots of unsold homes for affordable prices. One of the nice things about Tucson is that you can live comfortably on one decent income if you so desire. We made the switch from 2 to 1 income a little over a year ago and have had no problems. There are also teaching jobs aplenty, but the pay is pretty meager - I think $25-30K to start (don’t know what PA is up to now).

$25-30 K is about right for a starting teacher.
We would need to be near the University, but I have no idea where that is 🙂
Also, somewhere near the VA, cause that is most likely were DH is going to be working.

We are planning on making a heck of a roadtrip over Christmas Break to visit places, so hopefully, that will help.
