Code:**Remember 11/9**
by Karin AgnessCode:November 9, 2005
Code:College students are always looking for a reason to celebrate. In fact, we’ll turn just about any occasion into an opportunity to have a little fun.
But amidst our naïve glee, we seem to forget a day that deserves celebration: 11/9.
Sixteen years ago today, on November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was torn down. After an East German official clumsily said that East Germans would be allowed to cross the border into West Germany, tens of thousands of East Berliners gathered at wall checkpoints to receive their promised freedom. Tensions flared, but the crowds continued to demand their freedom. Resistance ultimately became futile, and the crowds were allowed to cross into West Berlin. West Berliners met East Berliners with open arms and they celebrated together. They took sledgehammers to the wall and destroyed the symbol of oppression.
