Remember that cat dd and I found?

We’re still feeding this cat… Siiiiigh. I tried to find a shelter for it…the response? WE’RE FULL. Every shelter in my county is full? What, are cats breeding by the thousands? It’s sweet, this cat seems to wait for us at the gas station every night, but I gotta tell ya, it’s getting old. He’s cute, but I really can’t take in a cat as a pet. And if I can’t find him a home, then he would end up getting used to us too much.

I told dd…we can’t keep coming up here night after night.

She said…why not. I said…isn’t it obvious why not. It’s getting old. She said, don’t you feel sorry for him though mommy? aw
I do.

I don’t want to call Animal Services. I’m afraid they will put him/her to sleep.

Okay, that’s the update…any thoughts to how to ever resolve this? Hubby said…‘you could just drive up there…forever, and feed him.’ Thanks honey. lol :newidea:

You know, one of my coworkers told us all about these dogs who needed homes today in an email sent around to the office…and they were snatched up in a heartbeat. I wonder why people don’t snatch cats up as quickly.:bighanky:

I have inherited a stray calico. She is really cute, but I have three large dogs who love to eat this kitty. It is getting cold outside so DH and kiddos have let “Sally” sleep in the garage. We are now feeding poor kitty milk and cat food. I, too, and trying to find a home for this kitty. My thoughts are with you.

lol…my kitty is a sweetie though…his name is saber. I teetered on thinking this cat was feral, but he/she seems to be very warm to us now. If there would be a way to get her/him neutered, and then keep the cat near our home, I’d do it. I’m hesitant to change the cat’s surroundings and he/she runs away…gets hit by a car. The cat seems to think the gas station is his/her home.

DD won’t let up about making sure we’re up there at 7pm every night. I said, sweetie, I’m not revolving my life around a stray cat.

I am glad to have been given the opportunity to show my children that it is good to show compassion to all of God’s creatures. They will be sad if we find a home for Sally, but she will be better off in a good home. I think she was a house cat initially.

ha, katie, you’re funny…nooo…saber is our cat that lives with us. the gas station cat…has no name. I told dd we should name him ‘shell’ since it’s a shell gas station.

I’m not watching the game…dh is recording it, as he is working late tonight. I wish he’d get a new shift…I miss him. :bighanky: But hey, that’s cool–GO STEELERS! Hey, that could be the kitty at the gas station’s name…STEELER. YES! Katie…I’m glad you popped in here tonight.

that just angers me to no end…house cats that end up as strays…I guess they could run away though, or get lost.

Please, please, see **Alley Cat Allies **website for information on taking care of feral, outside cats.

If a cat is near a highway, I would favor taking him to a shelter, even though shelters euthanize ferals right away - I think its kinder - better that being hit by a car.

It is horrible that people let pets breed and breed and overpopulate. It is sad that people do get tired of an animal and turn it into the “wild”.

One thing that has to be realized, unless YOU are prepared to care for this animal for the next 10 years OR you have someone else who is willing to or a no-kill shelter that will take it, calling Animal Services is the humane thing to do.

A female cat can have 2 litters each year. A male can impregnate many females. By keeping a stray alive and most likely unneutered, you are creating yet more homeless kitties.

Sometimes, as a responsible citizen and responsible Christian (remember, we were given dominion over the animals), the kindest thing is to have an animal put down.

At the least, see if there is a group that will trap the feral cat and neuter it.

I know you are a kind hearted person, but, if you cannot take this cat home or find it a home, it is time to do the right thing.

Not only are there all the unwanted animals born because folks won’t do the right thing and desex (it’s astonishing how many kittens one mother can produce in a few years) but there is also an inrush of pets surrendered by owners who have hit the wall lately and can’t afford to keep their pets. Or lost their homes and can’t find pet-friendly rental. And the shelters aren’t receiving as many donations right now for the same reason. Subscribe to any news site that files animal welfare stories and there’s item after item after item after item about chock-full and under-funded shelters.

You sound like my mother. She has been feeding some dogs who apparently go neglected by their owners - this has been going on now for over 2 years. Every night, 7 pm-ish, she’s there with their food.

I have no advice for you. I just wanted to share that.

Yep, I’ve read a few stories about that lately. It’s really sad, for the pets and for their owners- on top of all the financial distress, now they’re having to give up their furry friends, too.

I wish we could take on another cat or two (we have two already) but we’re planning to move within the next couple of years and I’ve never heard of an apartment letting renters have more than two cats. Since we can’t, we’re considering making a Christmas donation to the no-kill shelter where we adopted our current kitties.

We are fortunate enough to live in a that has access to all kinds of farmers who need cats in their hay barns to keep mice at bay. If we cannot find a home soon, Sally will be sent to a friend’s farm. He already has three cats and is wanting more. I think she would do well there.

In regards to the milk, I grew up on a dairy. Our cats thrived on milk and food. It has to be better than the alternative of nothing .

Of subject a little, but a litter of kittens can also have more than one father as well. When our barn cat had her one and only litter not a single one looked the same or like her, or the male we saw hanging around a lot, our vet speculated that her litte of 6 had at least 4 different fathers. My mom said she was not only a teenage pregnancy case, but she slept around too. I was a very scandalized 9 year old, and gave the cat a stern lecture on morals and values.

We found a black cat, with a little white tuff, outside earlier this week, he is currently living in our laundry room It has been VERY cold outside and I just couldn’t leave him out there.

He is fixed and has both front and back claws removed. We put out a sign in our neighborhood, although no one has called to claim him

So if ANYONE on CAF would like a very friendly, fixed, and declawed cat, PLEASE feel free to PM me today, he is in Indiana!!!

If he does not get claimed or find a new home by 9am tomorrow he will be at our local animal shelter. If they tell me they are full, I will leave him on their step with a bowl of food!!!

That’s funny you say that…my dh thinks we should leave “Steeler” at the gas station, as he might chase the mice away and be good there. He also might be used to that as his surroundings. I should say that he is not running in between cars in the gas station area…there is a grassy landscaped area, where we bring the food, and he must be sleeping near the back door of the gas station, i think, because that is where he prances out from.

Have you tried this route? An e-mail at work with a pic of this poor forlorn cat eating near a bush by a gas station?

I am serious about this. My house is currently overrun by cats - I want a dog now. Of course, we had to put my old poodle down about three weeks ago so, me the dog person, has to put up with all these cats who like me a lot anyway - they come and talk to me off and on all day long except those multiple hours they are sleeping in the sun in my room .
