“Remember thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return.”

“Repent and believe in the Gospel.”

Which prayer do you like most?

The priest at our parish today said “Repent and Believe in the Good News”

Can’t even remember what was said to me at Mass this morning… they’re both able to provoke the appropriate reflection.

I like remembering I am dust. We got the other one most likely because it is shorter. In my parish it seems almost every opportunity to make Mass shorter (other than dropping the unnecessary hymns) is taken.

“Remember thou art”, but the one I received today was, “Repent and believe in the gospel”. I do think this one was more appropriate considering the Scripture readings today, though.

I prefer the “Repent and believe in the Gospel”, which is what I got this morning. Both are powerful.

This is the first year I ever remember hearing “Remember you are dust…”

I like them both though.

I received my ashes from the abbot at a Benedictine abbey, which is where I receive them almost every year. They use “Repent and believe in the Gospel”. I doubt it’s to save time, the entire Mass is in Gregorian chant and runs a good half hour longer than your average parish Mass (maybe 15 min longer on ordinary weekdays).

I think though, with monastic life (and oblate life) being a striving for ongoing conversion, it the most fitting one to use in the abbey’s context.

But it doesn’t really matter what I think, as both are licit.
