I don’t know if this is the right forum to put in a thread like this. But if it isn’t, I’m sure it’ll get moved.
Anyways, I got a situation here and I wanted to know what my fellow Catholics had to say about it. I work at the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a Helpdesk Technician. It’s a very stressful, hectic, and fast paced job that includes a lot of availablity due to all the customers who call needing assistance. I don’t really like my job, but I’ve learned to deal with it considering the fact that I have an almost 2 year old son and a fiancee to support. So I kinda need this now. My shifts consist of Mondays-Fridays 6am-2:30 pm with the options of working certain shifts on the weekends. Particularly to make up hours in advance or for a day missed.
In the entire course of a year that I’ve spent working up here, those shifts have always been voluntary. But recently we’ve had a decline in numbers of people volunteering to work on the weekends. So just today my supervisors were walking around asking people if they could work this weekend. Since most of them turned it down, now their talking about drafting people to work on the weekends if they don’t get enough volunteers. Which I think is very unfair.
Now I’m pretty sure all of us here are familiar with the third commandment. Remember to keep holy the lord’s day. And from my understanding when it comes to work, that commandment has always stated that clearly that if it’s possible, you should refrain from workin on the Lord’s day and dedicate that day to the lord. By praying, going to church, etc., etc. It’s a commandment we’ve honored for more then 2,000 years and one that I’d like to think we still honor. Granted not everyone in the world is Catholic and that’s why in the ealier years of this country people weren’t working on Sundays but recently they have been. But still, I highly think it’s unfair and not right for them to make me work on a day that’s supposed to be a day to dedicate to my God and refrain from working. The whole country may not be Catholic, but I certainly am. And I don’t think it’s right or even LEGAL for them to make me do that.
What is your guys’ opinion on this matter? And also, if this does go down, WOULD it be a violation of my rights as a catholic/christian? And if so, what can be done about it?..
