We always hear a lot about the Catholic chaplains like Fr. Capodanno and Fr. Kapaun who are up for sainthood, and a couple more who were highly decorated or known for acts of heroism (such as Fr. Washington of the Four Chaplains.
But let’s not forget all the ordinary chaplains who died in service and have not been as well remembered
Here is one I found in my travels: Fr. Peter Bonner. There is a memorial to him in Annunciation church in Hazleton, PA, so I looked him up. Here is his obit from 1944. Note that at the end of the obit (you have to click on it to see the whole thing) it says he is the sixth chaplain killed in the war from the Philadelphia archdiocese. I’m sure there were quite a few more from other dioceses too. Let us remember all our deceased chaplains and say a little prayer for their souls today.
