I am really confused. Ever since Lent started, I keep suddenly remembering obscure sins from my past. What is going on? I have my first confession in a few weeks.

Well, perhaps you’ve been thinking on your sins lately.

If it’s your first confession, try to say everything. Don’t hold anything back like I did. If you want, you can write it down too.

It’s grace. Take the opportunity to feel sorrow for your sins. Don’t get stressed out about it though. 🙂

Go ahead and mention them all in confession, but don’t get neurotic. All that is expected of you in confession is that you do the best you can in that moment: that you mention everything and don’t deliberately obscure your meaning. If you get out to the parking lot and facepalm, thinking, “I should have mentioned x and y”, don’t freak out. As long as you didn’t deliberately withhold x and y, you’re good.

Perhaps it would be good to also mention that it is not required to enumerate venial sins in confession. It’s good to do so, but not required, even if you remember them.

What is required is to confess every mortal sin.
