If someone had told me last Christmas that the next one would have churches locked and it would be illegal for us to go to another family’s house to have mass or Divine Liturgy, my jaw would have dropped open.

John Paul ll, pray for us!

This short video of people gathering at a small church to sing in the middle of the night, far from watching eyes, really touches my heart this year. It’s our turn now.

Friends, thank you and see you on the other side.

My godmother is Slovene, and she told us what it was like under communism.
She and her family moved to Austria when she was eleven, and, they eventually came to the US.

You can share a story with me. I’ve heard a few as well.
We were able to go to a Polish church for a few months before they got closed. They remember all the significant dates from the last century that happened in Poland. These events are not far away, long ago. They are remembered in their hearts and are very sobering.

Sure. We will live into the answer.
I would love to be wrong.

What country are you talking about? The communist Eastern European countries I know about had both Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches open, but did not allow Eastern Catholic Churches. There were also services at a Baptist Church. If you were Eastern Catholic you could go to either a Roman Catholic Church or an Orthodox church. Church attendance was discouraged at school and at communist meetings, but not forbidden. . . . .

I’m Russian Orthodox (of Russian ancestry too) and many of my ancestors & the ancestors of people in theCommunity in which I was raised, either personally lived through Communist persecutions or knew people that did-family members, friends, neighbours etc. Many knew people that were imprisoned, tortured, killed or simply “disappeared” by the authorities, often on the basis of testimony given by complicit or collaborating neighbors.

Without in any way denying the existence of the current virus & pandemic, or belittling the deaths of those who have died (I know several personally), all I will say is that often throughout history, persecutions and attacks on Christians have begun under pretext of “safety” or “the public good”. It has often happened that hostile governments have used real moments of crisis to begin measures that endure long after the situation that caused them have disappeared. I hope and pray sincerely and earnestly that this does not happen with the current situation but to say it’s impossible…

Peace & Blessings to all!!
