Reminder on appropriate posting

Please limit your posts on this forum only to what is permissible under the label Catholic Tradition.

Please check Good Subjects for TC Threads to ensure that your thread belongs on this forum. There may be other topics that can be added to this list. Feel free to make suggestions.

If it’s not on this list, it most likely does not belong on this forum.

If you find a thread that you believe belongs on another forum send a message to the moderator of the appropriate forum and he or she will rescue it, if it belongs in that forum.

If I find it first, I will close it. A moderator can rescue a closed thread and reopen it in his forum. I’ve rescued some threads from other forums.

If the same person continues to post incorrectly, I will suspend his or her posting privileges. It then becomes evident that the person is unwilling to cooperate.

Remember that you are more likely to find someone who is very good in exegesis in the Sacred Scripture forum or someone who knows a great deal more about the Church’s social teachings in Social Justice Forum and so forth. People tend to gravitate to areas where they have a certain level of knowledge and interest or where they have questions. TC Forum is not the center of orthodoxy or knowledge. We have many orthodox and knowledgeable Catholics and non-Catholics in other forums on Catholic Answers.

You may find that someone already asked your question and the answer is waiting for you in the appropriate forum. Make good use of the search engine.

TC Forum is not for speculation or opinions on this or that. It’s for Catholic Tradition. For example:

1. 
   *]“My pastor’s sermon was the worse sermon I ever heard”. That’s a personal opinion, not a statement about Catholic tradition. It may be better in Liturgy & Sacraments or in Back Fence.
   *]“My pastor said A, B. and C about what St.Augustine said in City of God.” That’s Catholic Tradition.
   *]“My pastor said A, B, and C about the Immaculate Conception.” That’s Apologetics.
   
   Pay attention to these little details. They will help you place your thread where you will get the most mileage

With respect there’s no clear definition of what tradition is in this sub-forum’s rules.

For instance The Anglican Ordinariate is very traditional. Would that get discussed here? If not, then where?

If you’re discussing the liturgy itself, then it would go under Liturgy & Sacraments.

If it’s an event, then it would go under Catholic News.

If it’s the Anglican tradition itself, then it goes under non-Catholic religions.

If it’s the Ordinareate, it can stay in TC forum, since we don’t have a forum for ecclesiology or canon law.

In other words, if there is a forum where the topic fits, please put it there.

With great respect for the authority of the moderator, may I please be allowed to contribute my opinion to this thread?

It’s my opinion that many people who come to CAF find this online site very confusing and overwhelming (I did at first), and when they see the rather comforting title “Traditional Catholicism,” they stop and stay there because they’re not really looking for “Catholic answers,” they’re looking for Catholic fellowship and friendships.

Think of CAF as a set of real-life communities rather than online communities.

In real life, people find a group that they can be friends with. And then they come to THAT group to talk about almost everything–politics, religion, family life, financial issues, etc.

They realize that the group is not necessarily “expert” on every issue, and that they would get a more accurate answer by going to experts.

But that’s not why they are there. They’re looking for friendships, fellowships, a warm place and pleasant conversation with people they trust.

And I believe that’s why a lot of people go to the Traditional Section of CAF. They’ve found friends, and they trust these friends and just want to get their perspective about various topics.

I’m going to pick on the Apologetics Section as an example. This section is filled with highly-intellectual people, bless their hearts! It can be kind of discouraging to someone (like me) who isn’t nearly as intellectual.

The other sections can be daunting, too. I personally love various arts and am involved with music as a performer and fan. But I’m not particularly comfortable in the Media Section of CAF because I don’t understand a lot of the posts and the topics.

So I, too, tend to head towards the Sections where my “friends” hang out.

Obviously the moderator has privy to private communications between himself and the posters, and he knows best whether these people are truly “defiant” or not. I realize that there are times when a suspension is in order, and when topics should be closed.

But I’m suggesting that perhaps people aren’t “unwilling to cooperate”, but merely looking for friends here on CAF. So my humble suggestion is to be merciful. Rather than closing down their thread and giving out suspensions, why not PM them and in a kind and gentle way, tell them that you are moving the topic to a more appropriate section of CAF?

Assume the best of people.

One more suggestion–perhaps the Traditional Catholicism Section could be moved to the very bottom of the board. That way, it’s not at the top and one of the first sections that someone new will see. Perhaps this will help people to not just stop there and stay there. Just a thought.

We certainly understand the whole point about friendships and we appreciate how it’s important to many people to be where their friends are. Water Cooler was created for socializing. The other forums were created for teaching and learning.

Think of CAF as a large university with many colleges where you can go to ask questions on different areas. TC tries to cover every part of Catholic tradition that is not covered in one of the other forums. It’s not really a center for socializing in that sense. Though occasionally posters make comments on this or that and I let it go as long as it does not offend and people seem to be learning. If the comments are just chatter, then we close the thread, because the original subject is no longer of interest.

I do like your suggestion of placing TC in a less prominent spot. I’ll have to ask why it is where it is. It was there when I came along.
